Hello!

Using an external media on a second computer with digikam as well all folder pictures are gone. The information is not in the database, but in the digikamrc. This information stored in the database would do it, or am I wrong?

Thanks to everybody involved in programming this great applikation!

Best,
Marcus

I don't know if I understood your question... Are you asking if the folder thumbnails are stored in the database? If so, yes they are stored in the Albums table. So switching the database will preserve those individual album icons.
If I misunderstood you, please give an example of what you are trying to do.

Dear Andi!

Sorry for the misleading explanation. I try it again:

I went through all my some thousand pictures in some 100 folders. To all the folders I gave a picture as album preview.

All is stored on an external harddrive. This harddrive is digikams basic folder, there is the digikam3.db stored as well. Everything works well until here.

I connected the external harddrive to a second computer, as well running digikam. I pointed digikam to the same folder and it finds all pictures und the same folders fast, as it uses the same digikam3.db file.

But, there are no pictures connected to the folders as album previews, they are just blue.

Then I copied the digikamrc from the first to the second computer in /home/user/.kde..../config/.digikamrc.

Now I see the same album preview pictures.

My wish on the wishlist would be, to have this previewpicture folder relation stored inside the digikam3.db. This would give more flexibility to use the same database an different computers.

Thank you!

Well it works for me here. I'm relative new to the digiKam code, but as far as I know and from the scheme of the database all folder thumbnails are just references to existing images in your albums. You can see them in the database table "Albums" (in the column "Icon"). So as long as you don't change the folder layout, it works fine to use the database on an external device.
Thumbnails are not saved in the rc file, but I will check it with digiKam 0.9.3 just to be absolutely sure (I'm using 0.9.4-SVN and 0.10-SVN).
The only thing I have to change is the root-Path in the digikamrc (or in the settings dialog) to point to the new root folder.
I have 3 databases here, the first is my private photo collection, the second is university stuff and the third is my video collection (you can tag videos as well in digiKam). All of the three databases have their own folder thumbnails... it should work fine.
Now that I think about it (but I will test it anyway) this works for me since digiKam 0.9.2

I just checked with a Ubuntu installation on my virtualbox server, it works fine there, too (digiKam 0.9.3). So I really don't know what's going wrong on your system, but like I said before, thumbnail references are stored in the DB...

Dear Andi,

I checked it again with some pictures at an USB-Stick and it worked immediately - I must have done something wrong the first time!

This problem is solved.

Thank you, have a nice weekend!

Marcus

Marcus, Andi,

Multiple root albums path is supported in future digiKam 0.10.0. also, you can set removable/network media. I will trying to post a review of this important feature in my blog during this week.

Best
