Description Fred van Zwieten 2008-06-06 12:15:38 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.5)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

I am thinking about the Vista Sidebar kind of look and functionality. Look at the folder view plasmoid as an example for the looks. Free floatable on any desktop. One should be albe to have mutiple of them. Inside, one can contain several plasmoids who are then grouped. When moving the panel, the plasmoids contained within move along with it (duh!). Like the (plans for the) folder view plasmoids, these panels themselves can be docked and collapse inside an icon with a nice animation. The icons can also be moved. The plasmoids inside the panel can be arranged within the panel. Plasmoids can be dragged inside and outside the panel. Ideally these panels can contain themselves. That way, subgrouping can be visualized. Every panel should be able to display a title (font, color, etc configurable). Panels should not be allowed to overlap plasmoids on a parent panel. I would like to provide a mockup, but I´m terrible at such a thing. I hope you get the picture. If not, bug me.

Using KDE 4.7.2 / Fedora 16 Beta, there is the possibility to add a 'Grouping Panel' to which you can add Groups (containers of widgets).

Unfortunately the Grouping Panel is not ideal in its current form. The only sort of group I can add to the panel is a 'Flow Group', and adding widgets to the group is problematic. See bug 268296 and bug 258172.

I consider this wish resolved, the specific problems with the 'Grouping Panel' implementation should be handled in the specific bugreports.
