Description Bobby 2008-05-19 22:12:33 UTC
Version: (using Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: GCC 4.24
OS: Linux

There are some plasmoids on my desktop that I can only describe as "dead plasmoids" because they are just ugly black boxes that doesn't show which widgets they really are and that crash the entire desktop when I try to close them so I can't get rid of them. The most plasmoids also show up as black boxes when added to the desktop and cause the same problem.
The add widget dialogue doesn't show the widgets that are presently running.

The present KDE 4.0.73 that I am using seems to be a lot more unstable and unusable than the version that i tried many weeks ago, which was just a snapshot.

Please always attach a backtrace for crashes otherwise we cannot do anything with your bug report.
Also list the offending plasmoids that stay black, list the ones that crash, tell us the kdebase revision number.

If you can update also please do so, we did an amazing amount of work on those applets the last 2 days.

Thanks very much for your reply. My request may be a bit stupid but could you
please assist me on how to properly generate a backtrace. I have filed a few
bugs but I always wrote what I experienced without a backtrace.

I am not really sure which Plasmoids are hanging around as black boxes since
I can only see the boxes and not what widgets they should be. However, Bball,
Picture Frame and notes are a few of the plasmoids that end up as black boxes
when I add then to the desktop. Actually, the only ones that are working are
the clocks, device notifier, lock/logout, Kget and and the application
launchers. Could it be that my installation got messed up?
I am using KDE 4.0.74-1.3 on openSuse 10.3.
What I havealso noticed is that almost all KDE packages appear up to 5 times
in the Yast installation list.
I am considering doing a fresh install just to see if this problem will still
be there after an update.

For the crashes, see http://techbase.kde.org/Contribute/Bugsquad/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports

It looks like the only applets that work are the ones from kdebase. It seems the ones from extragear/plasma (ask your distribution for the name of the package) are black so I suggest you reinstall those.
For the Yast installation list, please also refer to your distribution.

Thanks for the reply. I am using openSuse 10.3 and i installed the packages
from here:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/UNSTABLE:/Desktop/openSUSE_10.3/
I also did a fresh install of my systen since I thought that something got
messed up but I am still having the same problem.
Below is a report that I got after the most recent crash while trying to add
the system tray plasmoid to the panel.

Hi Bobby, the backtrace is still not useful since it contains not the needed informations. Please use the debug-packages like explained at the link provided at comment #3 - thanks in advance :)
Comment 6 Sebastian Sauer 2008-06-04 04:39:49 UTC
probably a duplicate of bug #162018

Hi Sebastian,

Thanks for the reply. I will install the necessary packages so that I can make
a useful backtrace in the future.
I am now using the latest KDE beta version and it seems to be quite stable
apart from the missing Thumbnail preview (compositing) and a few other
things. I have had only one crash thus far while trying to drag and drop the
trashcan from the desktop to the taskbar.

Thanks once again

Bobby
