Description Leon Maurer 2008-05-01 18:49:57 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.3)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

When I fired up Kopete today, the usual window appeared for me to enter my wallet password, but it didn't accept my password and instead brought up another window asking for my password again. The prompt reads "Error opening the wallet 'kdewallet'. Please try again. (Error code -3: Not a wallet file)". This is the second time this has happened to me. The first time I ended up deleting the wallet file (and all my saved passwords along with it), but since it has happened twice now, I thought I should file a bug. I've been using kde 4 for a few months now, so this problem doesn't happen that frequently.

Sorry for taking so long to get to you. Error code -3 does indeed imply that there's a problem with the wallet file. Did this problem cease to exist with KDE 4.1?

If not, please check ~/.kde4/share/apps/kwallet/kdewallet.kwl while the error is happening. If the file is there, I'd appreciate if you could attach the first 12 bytes of that file (you can extract them using eg. a hex editor like okteta) to this bug. Don't worry, there's no secret information inside that range.

If that's not possible (or you don't want to), you can check yourself. The beginnning of a proper kwl file should read something like that:
---------------------------
KWALLET
0
---------------------------

I'm closing this bug because I can't reproduce. If you can provide further feedback, please reopen and comment.

Please reopen this bug.

I can confirm this bug happened to me in KDE 4.6 (Kubuntu 11.04). That happened when I started the system after a crash (the laptop had been suddenly powered off).

I attanch a screenshot with an octeta window with the beginning of the kdewallet.kwl file and the popup stating the "-3" error.

This wallet wasn't password protected (I set no password to access the kdewallet.kwl).

The actual content of the file looks like some config file contents. Even an unencrypted wallet's contents would look somewhat garbled. I'm not sure how this has happened - I can only guess it might be related to some filesystem issues with regards to the shutdown. I also have no clue how this should be fixed on the KWallet side of things, so I'm just leaving the bug open for now.

Hi there,

I got the same problem with KDE 4.14.3 (Fedora 20).
The problem occured after a "hard-sudden-unwanted" reboot of my computer, so I agree with Darek on #3 taht the problem occurs after a crash.

As suggested on a thread on the forum:
https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=225&t=122331
you can "solve" the problem if you create a new wallet from scratch (you have to delete the files in ~/kde/share/apps/kwallet/ )

Thanks anyway for keeping this bug opened.
