Version: (using KDE 4.0.3) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages OS: Linux Hi I have a 500GB external SATA hard drive, connected via USB. If I turn the drive on prior to KDE4 loading, KDE does not register the drive and does not automount it. The system is recognising the drive. The "Recently Plugged Device" widget does not show the drive and the mountpoint does not exist. Output of fdisk -l when this happens (for this drive): Disk /dev/sdb: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x000b8fcd Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 1 60801 488384001 83 Linux I have to mount it manually by clicking on the drive icon in Dolphin. The mountpoint then exists (although Recently Plugged Devices is still empty). If I turn on the drive after KDE4 loads, the drive is automounted and shows in the Recently Plugged Devices list. May be a case of KDE4 not scanning for devices plugged in prior to boot ? System: Kubuntu 8.04 using KDE4.03 packages Thanks!
I got the same one Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE 3. If I use my usb drive on a machine with Ubuntu 8.04 and the GNOME desktop the USB drive is automatic mounted at boot up and an icon shows on the desktop. This has been a problem for a long time even in previous versions of Kubuntu (7.04, 7.10) it never worked.
And what if you plug the driver after the boot sequence, before loggin in from KDM?
If I plug an external drive before log in, kde allows me to mount it with the widget notifier (or from dolphin).
If I plug an external drive before log in, kde allows me to mount it with the widget notifier (or from dolphin).
While the above works, it added an extra step to a process that only requires one step (plugging in the drive). I think the problem here is that this is not a standard action for users - on Windows and KDE 3 drives automounted on plug-in, rather than having to mount it by clicking an icon in a file system browser. Try this: Plug in an external hard drive with your music on it. Start up Amarok (previously configured to have a collection on the mountpoint). Result = no music because KDE isn't mounting the device. I have to start up Dolphin, click the drive icon, before starting Amarok. Finally, explain that to a Windows user who is interested in using Linux and who doesn't understand "mounting" (like I have done).
