Version: 0.12.7 (using 3.5.9, Kubuntu (hardy) 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu7) Compiler: Target: i486-linux-gnu OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.24-16-generic there a minor bug in kopete, it afectet mi after upgrading my kubuntu, but it may happen to anyone anytime I guess... In the German translation of Kopete is no trnslation for online offline and some other things, thats fine for me I don't think it would do any good to translate this. But it don't seems like theres "Online" translated with "Online" (or anything "German" instead), there apears "Conectado/Desconectado.." instead when the second leanguage is spanish for example, and it looks kind of funny when using Kopete in German. I gues the Problem could exist in other languages too
I'm not sure I understand. Are you saying that if you click Help > Switch Application Language and choose the "Primary language" as German and the "Fallback language" as Spanish, it uses Spanish for words for which there is no German translation? That would be the expected behavior, I thought. If you want missing German words to be replaced with English, can you pick English as the fallback (second) language instead? I don't have any language other than English installed, so I'm just trying to understand the problem. (Using Kopete 0.12.7 (Using KDE 3.5.9) on Kubuntu 8.04)
The problem is easy usually It looks very stupid, thats all. If theres for shure NO German translation for Email, 'couse its the same Word, but in Spanish it's called "Correo Electronico" Now if I use KDE in German, and my second language is Spanish, so now I can see for example(there much more then just this) left in Kontact wehere the icons for the diferent parts are, See everithing in german "Übersicht Kalender, Aufgaben...." But where I get to my emails, how theres no German translation for it, 'couse usually it would fall back to the same English word "Email" it uses the Spanish Translation "Correo Electronico" between all the German and what ever you guys thing, I things thats a bug, a minor one but still a bug... Th German Translations(and I gues others too) would need to be complete, even if English and German(or other Languages) use sometimes the same Word... greez Max
Aha, so what you're saying, is the correct German translation for the English word "Email" or "Online" is "Email" and "Online", and it should NOT use the fallback language for that? This is a translation bug then. And although I wouldn't normally trust Google, I see what you mean. If I take the phrase "I went online to check my email, and then went offline." and translate that into Spanish (which eliminates the English words) and translate the Spanish to German, I get "Ich ging online zu überprüfen, meine E-Mail, dann wieder offline." No idea how accurate that is gramatically, but I see what you mean about the words "online", "offline", and "email". Did you say you had this problem in Kontact too? Is this a KDE wide translation error then?
I've seen this in Kontact and dont even remember wehere else :D this is really happining lots of times, Kontact is just what I can see dayly... Kopete in the preferences has same things like this tooo I remeber... Its everewhere, where whoever made the German translation, dind't do it for words that are the same in English. and I tried it with other Langueages. and Ive seen the same errors happing(guessing cous in part I didn't knwo the languages)
Yes this is exactly the Problem, translators don't translate/copy word's wich are the same, and so if English not your second language for KDE it takes the words from the second language of your choice and it looks stupid if there are for example spanish words in a German KDE justr couse Spanish uses a different word than English but German doesn't and fallback language is Spanish so instead of showing it in English word what would be correct for German too what's why nobody did translate it, it shows the word in Spanish what looks pretty stupid... Complicated but I see finally somebody did understand my point, I'm sorry about my messed up English...
I'm the coordinator for german translations in KDE and I just noticed this bug report. I have to clarify something here: This is really no bug in the german translation of Kopete. All Words in Kopete are translated to german. Even Words like "online" and "offline" are translated. BUT: Nearly all translations in (K)Ubuntu are corrput. This is a known Ubuntu bug since ... well ... since ages now. Kubuntu usually deliveres broken, modified and outdated translations. This is the real cause for the bug. Kopete, KMail, Kontact, ... all these packages are translated 100% and with our Translations this bug would never exist. It's only the broken Ubuntu packages. Please contact "Canonical Ltd." and blame them for their poor l10n support!!! There is really _nothing_ we could do about it. Even if Canonical is aware of those Problems (there are many more!), they don't seem to care :-((( Sorry to tell you that, but I'll have to close this bug because KDE can't repair Canonicals broken Launchpad/Rosetta system.
