Version: (using KDE 4.0.3) Installed from: Fedora RPMs There is a checkbox option under the right-click->Configure Desktop menu to align icons to a grid. However, it doesn't work, there is no grid, and icons just pile to the left side of the screen like they're irregularly sized tiles. Reproduce it by checking the box and moving an icon so it's not on a grid. It's still not on a grid.
There's no kdesktop in KDE 4, but plasma.
Icons directly on the desktop are phased out and won't be in KDE 4.1
Wow, are you serious? KDE just finished jumping the shark then. Dumbed down lack of configurations like Gnome: check Unintuitive "Desktop is not a folder interface:" check Lack of consistant design: check Old, useful interfaces (kcontrol 3.X, the old menu style) replaced with much more time and click intensive "wannabe web browser" designs: check Yuck.
A folder-view applet will be available that can take up the whole desktop and have a z-index that will make it behind everything else. In effect, a desktop view. Icons just won't be seperate applets any more.
Ok, thanks for the clarification.
