Version: (using KDE 4.0.3) Installed from: SuSE RPMs OS: Linux After installing opensuse 11 beta 1, I made the mistake of enabling desktop effects in the kde control center. Unfortunately, I was able to do so even though the driver of the graphics card doesn't support it (sax2 reported that 3d won't be enabled). Afterwards, the display was messed up and I had a hard time finding out the right configuration file to disable it again. That's tough for new users who won't be able to find the correct config file to edit by hand from a shell.
some notes for the reporter: KWin doesn't require OpenGL (it can fall back to XRender, which on many cards works rather well actually) and it also has an auto-revert dialog when effects are turned on that should allow you to back out of the activation just by leaving it alone for 10s or so. if he auto-revert dialog didn't work, perhaps you could include in the report what steps you took in the configuration dialog (so that the kwin devs can ensure that the auto-revert dialog gets triggered properly in that case)
In addition to that, if KWin actually enabled effects, then it thought it could do so. So, unless you can point out more details about why KWin shouldn't be able to enable it, this INVALID is just CANTDOMUCHABOUTIT.
