Description urwald 2008-04-21 14:28:17 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.3)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

I KDE3, in konqueror I could create archives from files or directorys by doing a right-click on the icon(s) - in the context menu there was an entry to create an archive (tar.bz2 or tar.gz ...).

This isn't possible in KDE4 - I can only create encrypted archives in the context menu.

This feature is _very_ practical. Opening konsole just for that isn't nice, and this feature would make users live much easier.

Thanks Tim for the report! This is possible already in Dolphin for KDE 4.0.0 in theory, whats missing is "just" a corresponding service menu (see http://techbase.kde.org/index.php?title=Development/Tutorials/Creating_Konqueror_Service_Menus)
So it's not really in the hand of Dolphin to fix this. But I think the distributions might provide such a service menu soon...

Anyhow I've changed the state to NEW, as users cannot know that this is not a Dolphin issue; I'll set it to resolved as soon as a service menu is available.

I'll be happy when this gets some attention as it's not just (tar.bz2 or tar.gz ...) that needs to be addressed but also the commonly used .rar form the dreaded windows. I agree with Tim in the usefulness of the right click archive or extract feature. Let's hope it's added to Suse soon and other distros too.
Comment 4 Rosetzky Cedric 2008-06-03 01:29:58 UTC
Why not adding this service menu directly into Dolphins or Arks installation? (maybe Ark would be a better idea...)
Comment 5 Peter Penz 2008-06-03 08:03:53 UTC
I've reassigned this issue now to ark, as it is in the responsibility of the application to provide a service menu. @ark-maintainers: Please just drop me an e-mail if you need any support. Thanks :-)

Any news regarding this?
HI:
I've just installed ark Version 2.10.999 (KDE 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3), Debian packages)
and I still don't have a right-click menu
Comment 11 Harald Hvaal 2008-11-20 04:32:03 UTC
Implementing the context menu was a big change, and there was no way I could backport it into any 4.1.x release. It is coming in 4.2.
Comment 12 Haris Kouzinopoulos 2008-11-20 09:13:06 UTC
If this is fixed in 4.2 please also close #168177
