Description Vsevolod Krishchenko 2008-03-21 22:29:00 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.2)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS: Linux

I spent some time setting desktop effects and they all work fine. I press apply multiple times, disable and enable effects.

Finally, after pressing 'apply' one more time, kde showed 'desktop setting changed dialog' and next thin immedently black screen shows with lonely cursor.

Worse thing is restarting kdm does not help! Clearing ~/.kde4 helps. Here context of my ~/.kde4/

Looks like rather serious problem for me.

My hardware

The graphics card is an Intel 965GM Chipset.

The same alsa happens to me, but I click Apply only once. The only way to get out is using the Sysreq key.
My graphics configuration are fine, in fact, I have a very good performance, as stated by glxgears:

41405 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8280.935 FPS
108005 frames in 5.0 seconds = 21600.870 FPS
98661 frames in 5.0 seconds = 19731.514 FPS
48963 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9792.590 FPS
91321 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18261.406 FPS

I'm using 2.6.24 kernel, and the i915 kernel module.
xorg-server 1.3.0.0
If you need anything else, I'll be glad to help.

Forgot the KDE version... it's KDE-4.0.3, compiled by me.
OS: Gentoo

Please provide the backtrace from the crash (http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports).

Nevermind the question about backtrace, probably was meant for elsewhere.
Can this problem be still reproduced? The config file shows the blur effect is enabled, can you reproduce the problem also with blur disabled?

Waiting for a response.

Confirmed fixed here (although I'm not the original author of the bug). I used to get the black screen w/ cursor whenever I enabled effects. As of Gentoo release 4.1.68 this has not been happening anymore and the effects work. Graphics: ATI X800XL/fglrx.

*** glibc detected *** kwin: corrupted double-linked list: 0x08cf76a0 ***

When I turned on my desktop effects, I got a black screen with only the cursor visible. I couldn't see anything but I managed to run `kwin --restart` on konsole. After some seconds, the desktop effects were disabled automatically as I didn't confirm the change of my settings so I could see the output of the command. Maybe this is a help.
