Version: KDE 4.0.2 Kate Part 3.0 (using KDE 4.0.2) Installed from: Gentoo Packages I Currently have Aspell 0.60.5 and aspell-en 6 as well as hunspell 1.2.2 beta installed. All works fine except in Kwrite where when running the spell check option in Tools > Spelling. When I do this I get an error "The spelling program could not be started. Please make sure you have set the correct spelling program and that it is properly configured and in your PATH." I've also tested this with the KDE-Four-Live.i686.1.0.2 disc which includes KDE 4.0.2, to come to the same error. Spelling checking does work in Konqueror 4.0.2 though, as in I went to a paste bin and wrote some incorrect words and correct ones. The incorrect words were red as expected and the correct words were black as expected. I noticed there was no context menu when right-clicking to make a correction.
You're right, spell checking seems to be broken. I'm working on porting Kate' spell checking to Sonnet, KDE 4's new spell checking engine, so this should get fixed soon.
I encountered with the same problem on Kubuntu Hardy. Currently I'm using KDE4.0.2. Meanwhile I saw you're working on a fix.

Kubuntu Hardy KDE 4.0.3. The Kate' spell checking still not works.
Spell checking now works in KDE trunk.
