Target: i386-undermydesk-freebsd Configured with: FreeBSD/i386 system compiler Thread model: posix OS: FreeBSD I am having a problem running noatun, kaboodle on a freshly built FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE on GENERIC i386 (on verified h/w!). When i open an mp3 with noatun or kaboodle it seems to skips every 2nd second of music. No tuning on behalf of artsd make any difference. On the other hand totem plays great, xmms plays great (even with the artsd pluggin). Additionally something strange seems to happen. When i open noatun and kaboodle *at the same* time, then for some reason kaboodle aligns with the correct time and starts to play at correct speed/timing. Playing with noatun equalizer (effectively eliminating its sound output), i can even get correct sounding behaviour from kaboodle! On any FreeBSD prior to that, i didnt have any problems with any program from kdemultimedia. At work i run FreeBSD 6.3-RC1 with kde 3.5.8, and the sound from noatun,kaboodle is correct.
I want to add that the effect of kaboodle having correct timing is achieved *only* if i hit the play button on noatun *after* i have hit the play button on kaboodle. So what happens is, kaboodle starts skipping seconds and after i hit play in noatun, kaboodle gets synchronized and starts playing at correct timing. On the opposite, starting with play in noatun and *then* hitting play on kaboodle does not make the trick. Now after i have made kabbodle playing correctly, with the use of the above trick, quiting noatun makes kaboodle skipping seconds again. Also i noticed that when "paused" kaboodle's time display shows time advancing, but at a rather disturbed rate, and this happens when not in the "trick" mode. In the trick mode, hitting pause makes time display pause as well. Having said all that, and while writing these bugs reports, i just installed amarok, and it plays great, generally amarok amaROCKS!!
I'm having the same problem. I've only tried with noatun, other players, like mplayer work just fine. Noatun keeps skeeping 'frames'... I don't know how FreeBSD installs this software. Are you sure akode's arts plugin is installed? Does it support mp3? If not, it may be falling back to the secondary decoder which isn't very good.

I haven't tried other formats yet. Basically, I found that whenever aRts Master VUmeter moves, the sound gets glitches. The effect is like some buffers in the double buffer scheme are being droped, like some chunks are being skipped. The KDE systems sounds are failing too. If I use KDE_Startup_new.wav sounds ok, but using KDE_Startap_1.ogg results in partial playback. Also, changing the system playback program to mplayer, for example, make all sound good, but switching again to internal player comes the problem back. I hope this information helps. I

noatun has not been part of the KDE 4 release and is no longer maintained. KDE now offers Dragon as a video player and JuK as a music player. Additionally, other popular KDE players have been ported to KDE 4, such as Amarok or Kaffeine. If this issue is still applicable to KDE 4 applications, please add a comment or file a new report.
