Description Michael Corsa 2008-03-07 23:31:02 UTC
Version: 4.0.2-2.2 (using KDE 4.0.2)
OS: Linux

Kopete configuration correctly identifies webcam Logitech Communicator S and interface type ZC301-2 under KDE 4.0.2 but no image is displayed, only a gray box. Same configuration running under KDE 3.5.9 works perfectly.

According to
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?s=e2f904d0dd01d111c2031bccebf7026f&showtopic=107453

this specific device works fine with Kopete (Mepis 7, default install).
As far as I can tell that device is basicly the same as Creative Webcam NX (I have two of them for testing purposes), and they work just fine with Kopete (gspca driver - http://mxhaard.free.fr/download.html ).
Michel, please test your webcam with the latest drivers, downloadable from the link I mentioned. If the problem stops manifesting, please report here so I can close the bug. If not, please attach the following things to this bug report:

1. A screenshot of the Kopete video configuration tab with the bad image;
2. A copy of the information generated by Kopete's console output. You can run a debug version from a konsole, (use kopete --noconnect) and open the video configuration tab. Copy all of the console output to a txt file and attach to this bug.

Please do it in the following two weeks, so we can address this problem as soon as possible. If I get no answer from you about it, and based on reports and personal experience that this (or a very similar) device works, I'll have to close this bug as WORKSFORME.
Please report asap.

As I mentioned, the cam and drivers work just fine in KDE 3.5.9 under latest kopete, it is only under KDE 4.0.2 it is not working. According to SuSE Updater tool I have all the current versions of everthing including the gspca driver. I will post the additional information you asked next weekend as soon as I can.

Konsole output was a single line repeated until I terminated kopete.

QPixmap::fromImage: Cannot convert a null image

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but I am running on AMD Dual Core Athlon x86_64 version of SuSe.

I have since updated to openSuSE 11.0 and KDE 4.1 and still have the same issue. Webcam continues to function fine in Kopete under KDE 3.5.9 but not under KDE 4.1.

I have exactly the same problem, my webcam logitech quickcam communicate stx is not displayed under Kopete (a black image). I am under Mandriva 2009.0, KDE 4.1.3 . the webcam is well install because other apllication (like Ekiga) are able to show the webcam. Hereafter the console message :

Pierre, can you please confirm if you're using the spca5xx or gspca kernel module, and what specific version of this module? The fact is spca5xx and some versions of gspca use the deprecated v4l1 video API, and even a more recent gspca2 version is has not added full support to some devices. The fact is I have two webcams here who use such modules (I started developing with them and a bttv PCI card), and they just work fine (I have 9 different webcams here who use uvc, sn9c1xx, spca5xx, gspca, gspca2 and pwc, and I'm unable to recreate this bug). Please install the kopete debug packages provided by your distro and try to get Kopete's full console output from the point you open the configuration panel and activates the webcam control panel.
I'm very bent to believe it's a problem with the kernel module, and in fact stripping out v4l1 support and sticking to v4l2 is a planned move, as it is hacky to say the least to maintain and supporting such an old API along a more modern one, and I didn't do that yet solely because a lot of users would be unable to use their webcams. I'm just waiting Mr. Xhaard (spca5xx/gspca/gspca2 main developer) to complete the v4l2-ification of his code so we could all benefit from it. I ask you to take a look at Mr. Xhaard's project homepage, because _maybe_ it could be a problem in his driver instead of Kopete.
I'll be waiting for the console output I asked you for.

Thanks in advance.

I am using gspca module of the kernel 2.6.27.5

For the console output, I haven't find kopete debug package with my distro.

Update if anyone cares. Currently running KDE 4.2.4 using Kopete 0.70.4.

In configuration window, the cam image will appear if I start the config dialog TWICE. First time is blank, second time it will appear.

However, still no cam invites get sent for either Yahoo or MSN, and I cannot view any cams from others.

This is getting maddening. aMSN works great for MSN only for those needing an alternative, Yahoo I don't know but need.

Giant step backwards. :(

Does this still happen with the latest version of Kopete?
Comment 13 Matt Rogers 2010-01-17 04:47:20 UTC
Webcams in general, and specifically for Yahoo! have been fixed for KDE 4.4. If the settings dialog continues to fail to work, please reopen this bug.
