Description Nate Herron 2008-03-05 05:11:03 UTC
Version: unknown (using 4.0.2 (KDE 4.0.2), Kubuntu packages)
Compiler: gcc
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.22-14-generic

I right-click the desktop and choose "Configure Desktop". I choose a new wallpaper from the existing list and then click "Apply". The wallpaper flashes for a split second and then seems to be covered by a white layer which cannot be removed. Effectively giving me a solid white wallpaper. If I log out and back in the new wallpaper displays fine with no white layer.

Cannot reproduce on revision 781559 (more recent than 4.0.2).

Did you have desktop effects enabled?
Comment 2 S. Burmeister 2008-03-05 13:31:54 UTC
I can with Revision: 782305, desktop-effects are enabled.
Comment 3 Nate Herron 2008-03-05 14:43:31 UTC
Yes, desktop effects are enabled for me.
Comment 4 Lubos Lunak 2008-03-05 14:53:17 UTC
Try without them. What gfx driver?
Comment 5 S. Burmeister 2008-03-05 18:49:42 UTC
Also happens without desktop-effects, using current svn branch. nvidia binary, latest version.
Comment 6 Jens Hartwig 2008-03-05 22:07:27 UTC
Happens here too. No Effects and ATI Binary
Comment 7 Jared 2008-03-06 02:49:24 UTC
This also happens to me, though with desktop effects enabled, the white screen is localized to the desktop background only, but with it disabled it encompasses the full screen, panel and plasma settings window and all.

using ubuntu 7.1, with the 2.6.22-14-rt kernel and the 169.09 nvidia drivers with an 8800GTS card
Comment 8 Jens Hartwig 2008-03-06 09:29:15 UTC
Restarting KDE shows the correct Wallpaper.
Comment 9 Jeroen Tietema 2008-03-06 12:25:16 UTC
I can confirm this. I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 with KDE 4.0.2
Desktop effects disabled on an Intel X3100 Graphics card.
Comment 10 Erlend Hamberg 2008-03-06 13:21:04 UTC
I also have this problem. KDE 4.0.2, openSuse.
Comment 11 Jan Mette 2008-03-06 14:07:03 UTC
Also confirmed on Arch Linux for 4.0.2, regardless if desktop effects are enabled or disabled.

nVidia 169.12
Xorg 1.4.0.90 (5 September 2007)

Also the "OK" button does not work in the wallpaper dialog, and apply gives the already mentioned white background. A restart of KDE shows the new wallpaper...
Comment 12 Will Stephenson 2008-03-06 21:12:04 UTC
Me too, nvidia 169.12 on 2.6.22.17_0.1-0.1 x86_64
no desktop effects
4.0.2, openSUSE.

After killing and restarting Plasma the changed wallpaper is loaded.
Comment 13 Ningyu Shi 2008-03-06 23:03:19 UTC
Same thing with me.
Debian experimental kde4.0.2, ati fglrx, no desktop effect
This doesn't happen with kde4.0.1
Comment 14 nihui 2008-03-08 03:35:26 UTC
confirmed this on Magic Linux.
KDE 4.0.2
compiled source.
no desktop effect enabled, and no binary video drivers installed.

press "Apply" button, the wallpaper went white, and it turned to be fine after I restarted kde(logout & login).

Also affects wallpaper switches in slideshow mode...
Comment 17 Jan Mette 2008-03-08 13:26:28 UTC
Fixed for me by applying this patch from SVN trunk:

http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/KDE/kdebase/workspace/plasma/containments/desktop/desktop.cpp?r1=766414&r2=768808

In case the link is not displayed correctly here, i will attach the patch too.

Greetings

patch from trunk to solve white background when chaning the wallpaper

revision 766414

Reverting patch until Plasma::Phase gets fixed, or we find another solution.
Comment 19 Sebastian Sauer 2008-03-09 06:58:21 UTC
Hi Jan,

could you please apply that patch to the 4.0-branch? If you don't have a SVN-account, I (or somebody else) would do. Thank you very much for the patch!
Comment 20 Jan Mette 2008-03-09 18:08:47 UTC
Hi Sebastian,

i have no SVN account. I just create KDE packages, noticed the broken wallpaper stuff and then searched for suspicious commits on WebSVN, and the first patch i tried solved the issue...

Thanks to me? Well, thanks to the KDE devs for the clean code. I am not even a programmer and found this one easily :)

Please commit it, i cannot do it.

Thanks

Jan

Comment 25 Tom McLernon 2008-03-29 17:58:48 UTC
This bug seems to be fixed, and came through on a Kubuntu 8 update. The
problem just magically went away. Good work.

I know this is the Bugs team, but I have a feature issue that is sort of a
bug. Just as a comment I have been using KDE for years, but not as the main
OS because there never has been a 100% "just works" scenario. For instance
I could never find a satisfactory driver for the printer, even earlier
versions of KDE4 were a test of patience.

But this Kubuntu 8 with KDE4.0.2, installed, and low and behold, the printer
"just worked', I hit the print button on my web bank statement, and there it
was, a perfect print. I checked the printer set up screen and it had even
correctly identified the printer model. I have an intelli-mouse, 4 button
one wheel, the paging back and forth mouse buttons never worked with KDE,
for the PC screens or the browser web pages. I have Firefox 3 Beta 4 with
this KDE4.0.2 set-up, and low and behold the mouse paging buttons "just
work" on the web pages. They still don't work on the PC screens or Konquer,
but I was thinking if they work in Firefox, it should not be such a big leap
to get them to work in the KDE screens.

I use Firefox because there still seems to be some rendering issues with
Konquer, (can't access some web pages) but overall comment, this KDE4 looks
like it will turn into a fantastically pleasing UI.

Regards,
Tom McLernon
