For me it is just a distraction, all info I need is presented in pane so I don't need animated repetition of something I already see. It would be more "smooth" (for me) if I could just move cursor. I agree. Good thing is that the tooltips are currently broken in the KDE4 version and is completely disabled there :)

I'd also like to see an option to disable this feature. Strangely it is possible to diable the tooltips for the message list but not for the folder tree.
Starting with KMail from the KDE 4.2 release, you now have the options: always show tooltips; never show tooltips; only show tooltips with the folder name is obscured. This configuration option can be found in the context menu of the Folder column header. You will not find it in the KMail->Settings configuration dialog. So closing this.

yes, please open another bug. perhaps a Folder tab under the Appearance page makes some sense. Not sure.
