Description Joseph Thomas 2008-02-18 12:23:43 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.1)
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package
OS: Linux

KDE 4.0.1 on OpenSUSE 10.3 is rather slow, sluggish, whatever. This also happens with other distros (including Arch Linux -- which is even worse performance-wise).

Enabling desktop effects slows things down DRAMATICALLY (about 2-3x slower than normal). Enabling effects also shows desktop artifacts and other strange anomolies (wut?).

Specs:
Intel Pentium 4 1.6 GHZ
GeForce 6600 GT
768 MB RAM

This should be well enough to run KDE 4.0, if it's not.. then you guys need to haul ass and optimize KDE 4.0 (this machine runs Vista Ultimate fine as long as I'm not running several applications at once).

Sorry, but "sluggish slow" is not a real problem, but more worth of user support.
We cannot track generic problems like this; if there is a _real_ problem and specific to some (or more) applications, and that can be proved, feel free to report.

Hi,
well I have the same problem with my new KDE 4. It becomes just incredibly slow, even without any effects on. At some point it becomes so slow that I thought it crashed.

And in fact, one maybe related bug is that at some point (after a few hours of work), I have to do Ctrl+Alt+Del/Suppr to get out of KDE...

(KDE 4.1, OpenSuse 11.0, Sony vaio VGN-SZ)

Hi Éric,

KDE 4 tends to exhibit a number of problems in graphics drivers. Could you tell with CG you have and which driver you are using? If it can help, someone has started a page with tips to work around those issue. It may or may not work in your case. http://techbase.kde.org/User:Lemma/GPU-Performance
