Description Michael 2008-02-12 17:00:11 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.1)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc version 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2 p1.0.2) distcc 2.18.3 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) [enabled] (But not used by distcc?)
OS: Linux

I had no idea that this wasn't the extremely annoying KickOff that has been set as the default. To me 'Menu' seemed to describe the default one, not the classic/traditional/older menu that I actually enjoy using.

The reasons I hate KickOff are likely covered elsewhere and aren't really on topic for this bug.

Oops, I must have been a bit distracted in writing the compiler note. I meant to ask "(But not used by cmake)" like I had during a prior bug-search that I mistakenly picked 'kicker' for.

the comment below the title says, "Traditional menu based application launcher". for people new to KDE, it's not "traditional" or "old" and in a couple years this will be even more true. we note it in the comment, in any cas.e

It's still improperly named then, because the primary, big bold letters name makes me think it's something it's not, thus I skip over the thing which explains it, since I perceive that's likely not useful information. Which is probably the same conclusion most other users will reach.

You want a future perfect name for it? How about describing it in one of these ways.

Instead of: "Application Launcher Menu"
"Simple Application Menu"
"Light Weight Application Menu"
"1990s Style Menu"

Just something, anything, in the actual big bold name to tell me what kind of menu it is. Otherwise it's just as good as adding all your menus like...

Menu 1
Menu 2
Menu 3

...and describing them beneath the menu entries. (However at least if you did it that way I'd know I needed to read the text beneath it to figure out what they were.)

"Simple Application Menu"

it's plain.

"Light Weight Application Menu"

i don't think this describes it very clearly.

"1990s Style Menu"

heh. we can one for each decade! =)

look, what's needed are little screenshots. we actually have support for that already, but don't provide any actual shots. but no name is going to clearly identify it for all people, and i'm not going to change it from one name some people don't get to another name other people won't get on the translators.

and that's why i closed this BR: i'm not going to change the name. if you think a BR has been closed incorrectly by the triager, add a comment. we still get the note.

You may have a valid reason for shooting down the '1990s Style Menu' name, however in this particular case, I think that is fitting. That's really the timeframe in which that type of menu became popular and widely used.

A more technical name for it might be Nested Lists Menu, though that seemed too technical for me to suggest.

As far as providing screenshots of it, I don't think that would really be practical for most of these. However if you want something really flashy how about just providing a nameless widget-foundry, a container that has every last widget inside of it and just lets you drag out a clone.

Actually that might work better then your image suggestion, but the name still doesn't clearly tell me that it is not the menu that I was trying to replace.

What about "KDE3-Style Menu"?
But that is not quite true, because it is more than just the "K-Menu" we know from KDE3.

(Actually I'm fine with the current name, but if it helps others...)

May I suggest "Tab" and "Tree" menu styles...

[not Menu2000 (TM) and MenuNT (TM)! :)]
