Version:           1.9.7 (using KDE 3.5.8)
Installed from:    Slackware Packages
OS:                Linux

When I try to print a message, kmail crashes without any backtrace available.

Does not crash for me.
Please try to get a backtrace with GDB. Maybe http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports has information how to do that.

When usually backtrace dialog appears in this case it closes immediately

Something is wrong with your system, you're mixing incompatible libraries. Report that bug to your distribution.
