When you open kickoff and focus the search text, the cursor caret is not shown if the textbox is blank. 

I'm using NVidia proprietary driver, default color scheme.

this works here just fine. are you using the latest version of the nvidia drivers released in december?

Yes, I can confirm it working fine at work and on my laptop, I did see it 
invisible on my home machine but I think that build was a couple days old 
I'll check that again tonight to see if it's still invisible.

this works for me; there's nothing in kickoff that would be triggering this in any case.
