Description Mark Grant 2008-01-14 18:24:48 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 4.0.0)
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package
OS: Linux

Hi,

I run KDE on vmware fusion. The virtual graphics card does not support composite effects and neither, probably do older video cards.

It is good that desktop effects are therefore off by default but turning them on destroys the desktop leaving a black screen with a nice white square in it. The only way to restart KDE without this pretty design is to change the setting manually in the config files. As I do not know which config file it is, this meant deleting .kde4 folder.

KWin first checks if X has necessary extensions enabled, so either it doesn't get enabled at all, or you do have the extensions. Please attach output from xdpyinfo and glxinfo.

Thanks very much for the speedy reply.

I am not sure if I have done this correctly but I believe I have attached the required output. It is worth noting this is a stock Kubuntu stable current install within a virtual machine using the latest Vmware Fusion. I am in the process of creating a Slackware virtual machine in which I will build all the components myself to see if this is a Kubuntu issue specifically.

Thanks again for all your work!

Regards

In xdpyinfo there are both Composite and Damage extensions listed and glxinfo shows suitable visuals and even the GL_EXT_texture_from_pixmap functionality, therefore your system reports everything needed for compositing effects. I suggest checking whether Compiz works on this system.

Thanks again!

Amazed to find that it *should* work. Will check Compiz this evening.

I have been unable to get a fully functioning compiz running on this box. I have not had weird graphics effects just error messages regarding missing bits and pieces. This may be due to my being totally new to the whole composite world though. I have had Xgl running and had compiz running without errors though also without any of the expected exciting graphical effects.

I do suspect that the vmware virtual graphics driver does not support hardware acceleration despite what it may be reported by xdpyinfo and glxinfo.

I will continue to investigate a way of definitively confirming if compiz works or fails horribly but please let me know of this bug should be closed due to inconclusive testing results.

Thanks again for your time.

If Compiz works better in any way (even if it just detects somehow that it cannot use compositing on your system), then please report anything that might be useful to make KWin work similarly. Otherwise there's not much I can do for you I'm afraid.

Closing until you can provide info on how Compiz works or what it detects to prevent it from activating.
