Description Gabor Körber 2008-01-13 09:46:12 UTC
Version: 1.2.4 (using KDE KDE 3.5.8)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

concerns kontact / adressbook

My display size is 1024x768
I have very small icons and try to give kontact as much space as possible. maximized window.
using latest kubuntu packages 7.10

With compiz / emerald:
When opening the distribution list editor, whole kontact window is resized at each click. (back and forth!) no matter "where i click".

everything jumps around horizontally by 20 pixels or something, making it very hard to close the distribution editor afterwards (since things you click on, even the main menu, are "shifted" after clicking them) and the whole thing is virtually unusable.

without compiz / with kwin:
the kontact window is resized but doesnt "jump around". even then, the big buttons in the interface widen the whole window to oversizes. also the distriblist editor is not dynamically resizable even without the urge of being so big, because of the buttons of it.

____________
even without the jumping behaviour in compiz the designed integration of the distribution editor makes the whole interface very clumsy, since it cant be dynamically resized.

I propose two solutions for workaround:
first, create a toolbar out of the used buttons in the editor, which would make resizing possible and wouldnt oversize kontact window

second, show distribution lists in the list/treeview together with contacts, and the detail of the list instead the "detail view" of contacts, this would keep the interface very clean. drag and drop of "secondary emails" out of the detail view still would be possible by dragging them onto the distrib.list in the listview.
contacts and non contacts can be distinguished by their icon in the listview or by filters.

since i think, the second proposal could need some attention (but is secondary in this bugreport), i will prepare a mockup on kde-apps, after i tested kontact on kde4.

The development of the old KAddressBook will be discontinued for KDE 4.4.
Since the new application has the same name, but a completly new code base we close all bug reports against the old version and ask the submitters to resend there reports against the new product.
