Version: (using KDE KDE 4.0.0) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages OS: Linux Juk, and other KDE4 applications using the Phonon libraries do not produce any audio on my built in HDA Intel sound card. Additionally I only have that card, so naturally it is the only thing listed in System Settings.
This bug appears on my system too. I have the same sound device.
Is your card greyed-out in System Settings -> Sound. Mine was until I removed my ~/,kde4/ folder for an unrelated issue. That folder, in Kubuntu, contains all configuration files for KDE 4.0.0, so since mine is no longer greyed out and I get audio I can only assume that this is a configuration problem, but since I wasn't actually able to look at the configuration file, I don't know what the problem is. I'm sure someone else can help you out.
Thank you that resolved my problem.
Okay, well I guess we'll just call the a configuration problem than.
Does anyone have a better idea than blowing away all of .kde4?
Did you ever use a KDE version before 4.0 (i.e. Alpha or Beta)? If yes, that might be the reason as I did not add upgrade code for some early config settings. The relevant config files are ~/.config/kde.org/libphonon.conf and $KDEHOME/share/config/phonondevicesrc. If there's an error it's probably in the latter. If moving that file solves your problem please attach it to this report.
Yes, I upgraded from previous Debian KDE4 packages. It suffices to remove $HOME/.kde4/share/config/phonondevicesrc.
Okay Matthias, and Marcus thank you for the information.
Phonon gave an error message for my Intel HDA AD198x, but used then instead AD198x (the first entry of HDA AD198x was greyed out). Removing the file $HOME/.kde4/share/config/phonondevicesrc solved the "problem". I encountered the problem when I upgraded from 4.0.4 to 4.0.80 kde4.1 beta1 in openSUSE
sorry i forgot to mention that I did not experience any sound problems, it was just an error message
What Hanno described is a compatibility breakage in HAL. There's nothing to be done about that, the breakage already got released :-(
