Version: (using KDE Devel) Installed from: Compiled sources OS: Linux I don't want to have composite on, or have the desktop effects on for one simple reason. It lags all my video games, and OpenGL applications. Quake 4 FPS get slashed in half, even X-Moto lags! Though if you don't have desktop effects on you run into another problem. All the plasmoids have big black boxes around them. I'm assuming this is because the black space is suppose to by an alpha channel, but it can't render because composite isn't there to provide a 32 bit color channel. Though this leads to my next point. Why is there a big empty space around all the plasmoid windows? I wouldn't mind if the corners around the curves were still black, but the black boarder is just awful. http://fallenacorn.com/piko/black_boarders.jpg
Do the plasmoids on the desktop have black boxes? If so, that's a bug. The panel one you shouldn't get, at least not with 4.0.0 or latest trunk. The device notifier is a known problem, and there's not much we can do immediately. We're looking into getting a better background image that doesn't look so bad without composite, though.
Plasmoids on the desktop are fine for me in 4.0.0. The only ones that have black boxes for me are the device notifier (which only has the black border when on the panel) and the popup calendar for the digital clock, which has a black border both on and off the panel.
Created attachment 22947 [details] Also krunner I can confirm that, here's krunner in all it's glory. I can't use composite because it crashes kwin and make a black screen.
it should be fixed in revision #759551, didn't specify in the commit, my bad :) the svg used when composite is off still has some room for improvements, i will put up a new version tomorrow
