Description Frederik Schwarzer 2007-12-13 21:23:53 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

German umlaute (like Ü, Ä, Ö ...) are not shown as umlauts if they occour at the beginning of a word at some places in the GUI. E.g. in kickoff the menu item Development->Translation (Entwicklung->Übersetzung in german) is "Ubersetzung".
The "Overview" (Übersicht in german) button in systemsettings is another example.
Comment 1 Pino Toscano 2007-12-29 14:46:35 UTC
Could it be the height of the text is not enough to "contain" the umlatus?
Comment 2 Marek Laane 2008-01-08 00:36:38 UTC
I've not seen this in Estonian (we have occasionally words beginning with umlauts, too), so it's probably connected with something specifically German? Though, of course, it may be layout problem...
Comment 3 Marek Laane 2008-04-06 15:38:13 UTC
Sadly I can confirm it: e.g in Dolphin there is toolbar icons text in Estonian Uksikasjad and Ules instead of correct Üksikasjad and Üles (in English Details and Up). It appears incorrectly only with default layout (text under icons) and correctly when you choose text alongside icons.
Comment 4 Marek Laane 2008-04-06 15:40:46 UTC
But is it i18n problem at all?
Comment 5 Marek Laane 2008-04-08 00:48:31 UTC
Adding Aaron Seigo to CC for he as "the boss of KDE" may be have knowledge why the layout is such as it is... or who can rightly answer the question and correct the problem
Comment 6 Serdar Soytetir 2008-07-20 12:18:39 UTC
We have same problem in Turkish locale. For example, Ü Ö İ characters can not be viewed.
Comment 7 Serdar Soytetir 2008-09-14 03:47:12 UTC
Any news about the bug? KDE version is 4.2 now :)
Comment 8 Frederik Schwarzer 2008-09-14 10:32:31 UTC
I do not see the problem her anymore (4.1.1)
Development->Translation (Entwicklung->Übersetzung in german) and
"Overview" in System Settings (Übersicht in german) look fine here now.
I do not know what fixed it for me.
Does anyone still have the problem in 4.1.1 or trunk?

buggy areas

as you see in snapshot (KDE4 trunk) tooltips are viewed correctly (Onizleme -->Önizleme)
Another example: Ileri -->İleri in Turkish locale.
Comment 10 Thomas Reitelbach 2008-10-31 18:46:28 UTC
This bug is fixed since ... hm .. don't know ... at least some time :)
Therefore I close it.
Comment 11 Marek Laane 2008-11-16 19:19:04 UTC
Well, I still see it: look (in attached file) to the toolbar entry Uksikasjad (in English - Details, i.e fourth icon from left; note that tooltip is correct: Üksikasjad). It appears as wrong only when you use default settngs, i.e text below the icon; if you choose text beneath the icon, all is correct.

(If relevant, the version is (I use Mandriva Cooker):
Dolphin
Versioon 1.1.80
KDE 4.1.71 (KDE 4.1.71 (KDE 4.2 >= 20081023)))

Picture of Dolphin toolbar

See the fourth icon from left in the toolbar: text below the icon says (incorrectly) "Uksikasjad" but text in the tooltip says (correctly) "Üksikasjad"
Comment 13 Thomas Reitelbach 2008-11-16 19:35:29 UTC
It's true, I see it in the toolbar of dolphin as well. Capital letters with umlauts are cut off at the top. In German an "Ü" becomes "U".

one screenshot to show bug

i think this bug is releated with Oxygen style.

another screenshot to show bug releated with Oxygen style

It seems a height problem.
Comment 16 Serdar Soytetir 2009-01-15 07:11:40 UTC
We are on KDE 4.2 RC1 and the bug still alive :)

Qt: 4.4.3
KDE: 4.1.96 (KDE 4.1.96 (KDE 4.2 RC1))
kde4-config: 1.0
Comment 17 Gökmen GÖKSEL 2009-03-20 21:39:13 UTC
This bug is related with QToolbar not KToolbar nor OxygenStyle, actually if you use TextAlongSide Icons for Toolbar items you will get correct chars ;)

KDE 4.2.1 with Qt 4.5.0 have same bug :(
Comment 18 Marek Laane 2009-09-18 15:17:50 UTC
It seems in KDE 4.3.1 the bug is gone, at least for me...
Comment 19 Frederik Schwarzer 2010-04-20 00:44:04 UTC
Can anyone still reproduce this?

still/again wrong

Sadly, seems to be back in KDE 4.4.2. See screenshot ("Ules" should be "Üles" and "Uksikasjad" should be "Üksikasjad")
Comment 21 Frederik Schwarzer 2011-03-25 20:36:07 UTC
Is this still reproducable for anyone?

If yes, with what widget theme?
Comment 22 Albert Astals Cid 2012-08-14 22:33:36 UTC
Waiting for someone to answer...
Comment 23 Christoph Feck 2012-08-17 14:49:29 UTC
As previously stated, it was a problem in Qt. More information at bug 186340.
