Description Dotan Cohen 2007-12-09 22:34:20 UTC
Version: 1.2.4 (using KDE KDE 3.5.6)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

The Select Categories dialog box in Kontact is very difficult to use. It suffers from three problems:
1) It is too narrow (415 pixels) and too short (326 pixels) when it pops up. I would recommend at least 500x600 so that many categories could be seen at once without excessive scrolling.
2) Clicking on a category does not select it. Rather, the checkbox itself must be clicked on.
3) When a contact's categories are edited (added/removed categories to existing contact), clicking OK in the Edit Contact window closes both the Edit Contact window and the Select Categories window. However, the newly [de]selected categories are not saved. So clicking OK has the same effect as clicking Cancel. In other words, data loss.

3) The "select" dialog is not updated after editing categories. You have to close and reopen it. Is already reported (actually I don't remember the number of the bug)

1) If you really need a more big "select categories" window, please create a new report with ONLY this question.

2) Ok. I change this report title according to this point.

The "clicking" problem also affect the KDE4 version and is annoying.

That is not the issue that I am reporting. The issue that I'm reporting is the fact that it is easy to click the wrong "OK" button and lose data. Please reread what I've written with Kontact open, it's rather clear when looking at the app. If you want, I can post a detailed screenshot illustrating the problem.

Here it is: Bug 154584

Thanks.

Thanks for the explanation. I've reproduced this on KDE 3.5.8:
1) opened "select" dialog
2) opened "edit" dialog
3) do some changes
4) clicking on "ok" in the "SELECT" dialog will close BOTH windows. And this is a problem because, as you reported, the new data is lost.

I've even tested it on KDE 4: this bug has been fixed there.

Ok.

If you want, we can close this bug and open two more distinct bugs: one for the second point you've noted initally and one for the third (only for KDE 3.5, not for KDE 4).

In this way we keep more polished bugzilla. :-)

Thanks for all!

If the bug is fixed in KDE 4, and if KDE3 is scheduled for retirement, then this is not an issue and a waste of developer's resources. If the KDE 3 branch is to be further developed, then in my opinion this should be fixed.

We'd then just have to reopen bug 154538, which is a dupe of my second point. Bug 154584 takes care of my first point, and you mention that the third point, while confirmed in KDE 3, is fixed in KDE 4.

That's best.

As this bug should have been three separate bugs anyway, I am reopening bug 154538, and filing a new bug for the dataloss issue (point 3 in the OP, which is still present in KDE 4.2.2 despite comment #4). I will close this big bug as invalid.
