Description David Hart 2007-12-09 21:52:36 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: gcc-4.1.2 cmake-2.4.7
OS: Linux

Complete loss of functionality from KDE 3.5. It's just wasted space.
Comment 1 S. Burmeister 2007-12-09 22:36:34 UTC
Can this bug please be closed as invalid. The report is useless and pathetic.
Comment 2 David Hart 2007-12-09 22:58:04 UTC
The idea is not to be insulting but to describe what I think is a major problem. Can we deal with the issue, please? There are a scant 125 issues filed in TOTAL regarding plasma. I doubt that this is representative.

This has been the subject of discussion in numerous user forums.

As is, the KDE4 panel is significantly less functional than the 3.5 panel. Moreover, there exists no means of configuring it differently. I cannot tell from the filed bug reports what will - or will not - be resolved.
Comment 3 Bram Schoenmakers 2007-12-09 23:14:06 UTC
As if the developers are blind. Closing.
Comment 4 S. Burmeister 2007-12-09 23:15:20 UTC
Still invalid. KDE 4.0 is not meant to replace 3.5 and hence never aimed at providing the full functionality of 3.5's panel.

If you want to help, get the difference between 4.0 and what KDE 4 will become. 4.0 is not meant for and never was meant for "normal" users and certainly not to replace 3.5.x.

Mediate that and you are of help. These kind of bug-reports are of no help at all.

> It's just wasted space.

this is the definition of irony. well, that and rudeness.

David, here's how it works: if you think something is obviously missing, perhaps you wish to ask the developers first. because chances are it occurred to us before you ever downloaded the code to compile it. maybe not, ergo the asking. but usually it has. we're not quite the idiots your bug report might have one think we are.

if you do feel you've discovered something that isn't being paid attention to, however, and you are going to file a report then to be taken as a serious report which will be followed up with sensible action, please do the following:

- note specific issues ("complete loss of functionality" is not only hyperbole, since i can mention things plasma's panels can already do that kicker's can't, but it is devoid of useful content)

- provide specific improvement requests. with this report, should i take it under consideration, perhaps i'll go implement applet handles to manipulate applets but what you were *really* after was resizing or hiding or maybe something completely else.

if you find this reply to be a downer, please consider that instead of ignoring your report or dismissing it out of hand, i have taken the time here to provide realistic feedback as to what will make better reports in the future. by making quality bug reports, you vastly increase the odds that what you are after will actually come to be. and that is, after all, whatever everyone here wants to see happen.

I have to agree. I went to Georgetown. Fortunately, for America, I switched from the School of Foreign Service to Business Admin. Blunt is OK but that was simply rude. Moreover, it is counter-productive. Something else was going on and I did not realize that my judgment and presentation were thus altered.

My apologies!

np David, it's happens to us all ... thanks for the post-report reply. muchly appreciated.

(btw, you'll have a more functional panel shortly =)

It's nice to see such dialog between users and developers, kudos to both of you! :)
