Description felipe 2007-12-06 23:07:07 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Compiler:          g++ 4.1.3
OS: Linux

The first time Akregator is started, the default window has quite strange size: too small and not very useful to do anything.

Konqueror uses 80% of the screen width/height as its default window size, why don't we have something similar for our beloved news reader? :)
Comment 1 Teemu Rytilahti 2008-01-24 21:06:06 UTC
Which version are you using? The one from trunk?
Comment 2 felipe 2008-01-25 01:17:57 UTC
Trunk (from a couple of days ago), here's what I mean by "strange" dimensions. They're simply not appropriate to let the user read or scroll the articles. http://pollycoke.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/default-akregator-window.jpg
Comment 3 Frederik Schwarzer 2008-07-16 08:08:39 UTC
Furthermore Akregator 1.2.50 from KDE 4.1 RC1 sometimes forgets its application size when restoring from systray.
Comment 4 Maciej Pilichowski 2008-07-16 11:01:47 UTC
Also applies to launching it. Reported already:

Still present on Kubuntu Jaunty Alpha 2 (KDE 4.2 beta 2). After first start the window size is too small. I maximize or resize it, then hide it using the system tray icon. Another click on the tray displays akregator, but it shrinks back to the original unusable size. That size is so small that only the first two or three letters of the channel can be displayed.
Comment 8 Manuel Schmid 2009-01-14 02:12:49 UTC
The bug with not restoring window size when it is opened from the system tray is still present in the RC (Kubuntu Intrepid packages). It seems that KMail has the same behaviour. Is this bug really Akregator specific or does it apply to all Kontact programs? Amarok doesn’t have this issue, so it’s not every application.

Kmail seems to be OK on my side. Only Akregator has this behavior. KDE-4.1.3. I did not check RC yet.

Today, I installed KDE 4.1.4 with Akregator 1.3.4 and it seems, that an issue with Akregator forgetting its size when minimizing/restoring from systray has been fixed. Anybody can confirm this?
Comment 11 Maciej Pilichowski 2009-01-16 19:12:14 UTC
KDE4Daily (so cannot be fresher)

1. run akgreator
2. maximize window
3. close
4. click on systray
5. the windows takes 1/4 of the screen

So, the issue is still valid.

Upgraded to KDE 4.2 and Akregator 1.4.0. An issue with Akregator forgetting its size when minimizing/restoring from systray does not occur here too.

KDE 4.2 / Akregator 1.4.0, this bug still happens. This bug has bugged me since upgrading from KDE 3.5 to KDE 4. Also happens with KMail and the whole Kontact suite.

Following the steps in Comment #11 with Qt4.5RC1 and trunk (devel. version), I can't reproduce this issue.

I also tried without maximizing the window. The window size is correctly restored in both cases.

Comment 16 Andrey Rakhmatullin 2009-02-07 13:20:21 UTC
WORKSFORME with 4.2 release.
Comment 17 Maciej Pilichowski 2009-02-07 22:09:48 UTC
Does not work for me in 4.2, start app, make it 1/4 of the screen, place at left, bottom corner, close, click systray icon to restore, it is place at the right -- the same place it was placed initially.

Hmm, yes. If it was placed at bottom left, it restores at top left. It retains the size though. Interesting that it is aligned to the edge of the autohiding panel, not to the edge of the screen (the panel is at the top of the screen, set to autohide, and is shown when akregagor is restored, because I need to click on the tray icon in that panel).

I'm using Debian testing with KDE 4.2.2 and have this issue too. When restoring from the system tray the window resizes to a small size (not the same size as when I minimized it).

Questions to everybody who still has this issue:

Which KDE version is that?
Do you use multiple screens?
Does it also effect applications like KMail?

I could reproduce it once (4.1?), with a two screen setup, and found out that kwin didn't store/reapply geometries correctly. It affected other apps, too.
At some point it started working again (4.2?) and I cannot reproduce it anymore.
Comment 22 Christophe Marin 2009-08-22 15:47:17 UTC
@Frank: I can reproduce a few things mentioned in this BR:

on a first launch condition (no akregatorrc), the window pops in the bottom left (size: 830*430 without the window decoration)

now using the steps in comment #11 : maximize / press the close button / restore from the systray icon, the window is unmaximized and in the top left corner (size 830*300)

I'm on a single monitor config, 1600*1200
Comment 23 Marek Laane 2009-08-22 16:20:31 UTC
Copying my answer from bug 168845 here, too:
KDE is 4.3.0. I don't have multiple screens. And I experience this only in case
of Akregator (though, I don't have KMail in system tray - but I have in system
tray Kopete which comes always up just in size it was before I minimized it to
system tray and same for Quassel which I have in system tray, too). So, so far
only Akregator has such irritating behaviour.
Comment 24 Manuel Schmid 2009-08-22 16:43:50 UTC
@ Frank: I have the same issues as Christophe with KDE 4.2.2 under Kubuntu Intrepid (8.10), I haven’t measured the window size though. Every time I restore Akregator or KMail from tray, it has a small window size. My setup is a single monitor with a resolution of 1680x1050 (HP w2207h). I don’t know if this bug is still present with newer KDE packages.
Comment 25 Manuel Schmid 2009-09-18 01:49:17 UTC
I have just found out that in my case the issue was due to a setting in the window properties settings. If I go to the window properties in the system settings and disable the entries for the Akregator and KMail default window size, the programs work as expected. This means that the issue is solved for me. Can the others still experiencing the problem try if this solves it for them as well?
Comment 26 Marek Laane 2009-09-18 03:45:53 UTC
Ha, you're right! I really did not remember I have made special rule for Akregator when problems started. Well, it didn't rectify anything but after deleting this rule, now suddenly Akregator works correctly. So it may be closed on my behalf, too.
Comment 27 Maciej Pilichowski 2009-09-18 18:42:33 UTC
Works for me too. KDE 4.3.1
Comment 28 Ricardo 2009-09-21 10:51:34 UTC
same here. kde 4.3.1 as well
Comment 29 Kevin Adler 2011-01-19 01:27:13 UTC
I have this problem.

KDE 4.5.5 / Akregator 1.6.5 openSUSE rpms
openSUSE 11.3 x86_64

Every time I close and re-open from the tray, the window gets resized to 767x441. The position is correct, just the size is wrong.

I have checked special window settings and there is nothing listed for Akregator. I added a setting and confirmed that that kept the window at a specific size, but after removing the setting it went back to previous behavior (so no, somehow, hidden setting).
Comment 30 Andreas Sturmlechner 2012-08-13 07:27:22 UTC
@Kevin Adler: See bug 218268 for more precise description of your problem. Does it still happen with kdepim-4.9?

No longer seeing this problem with KDE 4.9
Comment 32 itayshom 2013-03-16 18:51:42 UTC
This bug persists in KDE 4.10 on OpenSUSE 12.3.

When minimizing to tray, then re-opening akregator, it doesn't remember the window size. It always reopens in a default size, which is annoyingly small.
