And the best way IMHO is to have the same border as plasmoids have with a black and transparent frame. this would help also to create contrast with background/windows to improve usability

already discussed, long ago. that this breaks one of the cardinal rules of plasma has never been something i've like, but there's not much that can be done about it from a practical pov. we can't do this before 4.1 and full widgets on canvas support.

Kickoff theming has been implemented in trunk. (What will become KDE 4.2)
