Can we have an strace too please?

FWIW gspcav1 works for me (with creative webcam live!) but we are working on a patch to this driver, it doesn't play nice in several ways.

updated backtrace

I have updated to kdenetwork-3.5.8-9.fc8, i'm sending you a copy of the
backtrace and the strace.
Comment 5 Edward Karavakis 2007-12-13 16:11:01 UTC
the latest source from kopete.kde.org, which is 0.12.2, compared to fedora's (I
think 0.12.7), builds and runs fine.
Comment 6 Cláudio da Silveira Pinheiro 2008-01-22 10:40:57 UTC
Well, it works for me. I have two devices who use gspca1, and I test them with Kopete since 2005. They were my second target (after a bt878 TV card).
Please compile it from the latest 3.5 branch (svn) and run it.
Some distros apply patches to to their packages, and as nobody else complained about this problem (not even with the same distribution), testing Kopete compiled from source can reveal more, as it has a very descriptive console output.
Please compile Kopete from svn with debug enabled, run it from a Konsole, try to reproduce the problem, copy the debug output and add to this bug.
As I have no way to verify this problem without external help, and as it works for me and for William Stephenson, I'll wait for more info on this problem for two weeks, after that if I don't get the info I'll close the bug as WORKSFORME.
Comment 7 Edward Karavakis 2008-01-22 11:47:07 UTC
Well, it works with the latest gspca from livna repo (gspca-1.00.20-1) but it crashes with the r5u870 module. Hence, my webcam is not working with kopete. Strangely, the r5u870 module works great with Skype 2 beta and Ekiga.
Comment 8 Edward Karavakis 2008-01-22 11:54:20 UTC
Also, my webcam was working perfectly well with kopete on Fedora 7 some months ago. On Fedora 8 with the r5u870 module loaded, kopete crashes every single time I try to add an account or try to open the configuration option.
Comment 9 charis kazas 2008-01-22 13:35:45 UTC
I've got the same problem on my Sony Vaio laptop. The webcam does work (using the r5u870 module) with skype and ekiga but kopete crashes every time.
Comment 10 Cláudio da Silveira Pinheiro 2008-02-05 15:32:17 UTC
I'd like to know what Kopete versions are affected by this bug (3.5.x, 4.0.x or trunk).
Please update to the latest Kopete source of any of the aforementioned branches and compile it with debug enabled. When compiled with this option Kopete outputs a lot of messages to the console, and those messages describe the steps Kopete's doing. Please run Kopete from Konsole, try to reproduce the crash, copy all of the debug output to a txt and attach to this bug report, so I can take a look and detect what's wrong.

Best regards

I'm running kopete version 0.12.7 and kdenetwork-3.5.8-9.fc8 on Fedora 8. I have already attached the backtrace and the strace of the crash (debug mode was enabled). I had no problem (no crash whatsoever) with kopete and the r5u870 module on Fedora 7.
Comment 12 Cláudio da Silveira Pinheiro 2008-03-09 05:53:09 UTC
Based on the fact it worked for Edward Karavakis on Fedora 7 and stopped working on Fedora 8 (what is a signal of being a distribution-specific problem), I'm seriously tempted to close this bug.
Edward, the information I requested from you twice is not, by any means, an strace. An strace cannot provide the data I need to detect a possible problem. I need the info Kopete generates when performing the various steps while _probing_ the device, and this info is sent to the console output at execution time. This info contains a comprehensive, step-by-step description of what Kopete does to access the device. The strace is not enough.
I ask you again to provide that information. It may be a hard-to-find bug that will be of great value to find out how to fix it, so I count on your cooperation to help us to address this problem.

I'll wait for more info on this problem for two weeks, after that if I don't get the info I'll close the bug as WORKSFORME, as I need the requested information to debug it, and I'm unable to do so without it.
Comment 13 Edward Karavakis 2008-03-09 15:04:35 UTC
i've downloaded and installed the latest kopete from the old stable branch (0.12) and the latest r5u870 module (version 0.11.0 http://wiki.mediati.org/R5u870#Download ) and it works fine, no crashes whatsoevery. Hence, it's a distribution specific problem. I will send a copy of the generated output while probing the device.

Can't reproduce this using kdenetwork 20080705+svn828272 and gspca from Ubuntu 8.04.1.
Comment 16 George Kiagiadakis 2008-07-24 11:13:51 UTC
I can't reproduce too with KDE 4.0.99 and gspca from debian.
Comment 17 Alan Jones 2008-12-29 04:44:57 UTC
Seems to not be repro in a recent trunk and appears to be a downstream issue. Closing. Please reopen with a backtrace if found.

Cheers,

Alan
