Description François LE QUEMENER 2007-11-03 19:05:26 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.7)
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs
OS: Linux

I've been surprised when I installed my Mandriva 2008.0 : I cannot use the combination key + scroll up/dow (for exemple the very useful CTRL + Scroll to zoom). This doesn't work for every application, KDE or not (Firefox, Inkscape, Gimp as well).

I tried to isolate the problem, and it seems KDE is the problem :
 - Xorg receives the good signals from my mouse (xev has a different output depending on if I press the key when scrolling)
 - The other programs work perfectly on the others systems I have on my computer. The only difference I see is the KDE version.

Nobody could help me on IRC neither on KDE forums.

Can you give an example? In which application does it not work?
I assume this is about CTRL + mouse wheel... this is only implemented in apps that can zoom, obviously.

This is about CTRL + mouse wheel, and SHIFT + mouse wheel, that I use in many graphical applications.

I saw this bug on all applications above : (tested and working on other systems)
firefox, gimp, inkscape, openoffice, konqueror

Instead of a zoom, I only get a "basic" scroll

I suppose that it is the same for all applications, I never saw the combination working under my 2008.0 system. That's why I think it comes from KDE.

What is surprising, is that it is working well in my emulated OS (Kubuntu and Windows XP on Virtualbox)

since it works with KDE in Kubuntu for you and affects applications not written with KDE libs, i very much doubt that it's KDE at all. it's much more likely to be the X.org configuration as setup by your Mandriva OS or an odd key mapping somewhere, etc...

Maybe you're right Aaron, the thing is that I could not find any help or lead to resolve this problem. All I could test for the Xorg part is the output of xev, which seems to be ok.

If you give me some leads to check whether it's KDE or Xorg, you can make the things evolve.

Thanks

"the thing is that I could not find any help or lead to resolve this problem."

i understand that can be frustrating, but bugs.kde.org is not the venue for this. can i suggest the mandriva support forums instead?

given that it is affecting your non-kde apps and that it works in another OS using KDE (kubuntu) it really is certainly not a KDE issue but something with your mandriva installation.

i really don't know what it could be off the top of my head, and i really feel sort of bad moving you on to another place for support like this, but .... it really is the right thing to do. i'm sure you can imagine that if we provided user-level operating system specific support for every user here that we'd never get anywhere on kde itself. =)

here's a possible hint though: if you're running their metisse window manager it does thing with ctrl+scroll itself so it may be getting in the way. try a different window manager, such as kwin, to confirm.

in any case, i'm closing this bug as it's not a kde bug =)

OK I got it. Don't apology, I understand the situation. I tried the Mandriva forum before as well, without answer...

Thanks for all
