Version: 0.9.2.3.5.8, Kubuntu (gutsy) 4:3.5.8-0ubuntu3.1 (using KDE KDE 3.5.8) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages Compiler: Target: i486-linux-gnu OS: Linux When I connect to another Kubuntu through ssh with Dolphin, the non-ASCII characters (like á é ñ etc.) are showed like á Ã- etc. If I connect directly with ssh through console, and I do an ls, these characters are showed correctly. I have UTF8 locale in both systems.
I saw that I have the same problem with Konqueror.
Thanks for the bug-report! I know it has not been communicated very well, but bugs.kde.org for Dolphin is only valid for the KDE 4 version of Dolphin, the KDE 3 version is not maintained anymore (see also http://enzosworld.gmxhome.de/download.html section "Dolphin 0.8.2 (KDE 3.5.5)" for more infos). I could not reproduce this issue inside the KDE 4 environment, so I hope this issue is solved. Please let me know if you still face problems. Thanks!
I'm testing KDE4rc2 on Kubuntu 7.10 (with locale set to en_US.UTF-8) and I experience something very similar. When I use the fish protocol in Dolphin to log on to a POSIX system characters are displayed correctly but not when I access an en_US.UTF-8 system. Is there a way to check which charset Dolphin is actually using?
I get the exact same (faulty) behaviour in the KDE 4.0 release. I've tested it on Kubuntu 7.10 and the latest KDE4 OpenSUSE Live CD. Does anyone else still experience this?
I can add this information: If you open the same adress in konqueror, you have an option in the menu (i think it was in extras) to change the encoding to utf-8. Afterwards the right encoding appears as well in dolphin. Don't know where it is stored (using d3lphin on Kubuntu Gutsy).
Daniel, do you mean "Tools -> Select Remote Charset" in Konqueror 3.5.x? I've been looking for something similar in both Dolphin and Konqueror (KDE 4.0.0) but so far no joy. Does anyone know if this feature has been / will be ported to KDE4?
This issue is on Konqueror 3.5.9 too (and Dolphin 0.9.2, of course, but that is KDE3)
Sorry for closing this bug. I've reopened it as I can reproduce it too within KDE 4.0.1 and trunk. I've changed the product to 'kdelibs', as the handling of the filenames is not done by Dolphin itself.
I have the same behavior with dolphin and konqueror in KDE4 (on Kubuntu 7.10), the utf-8 characters are not properly displayed when using ftp or ssh.
The downstreams are complaining about this as well: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde4libs/+bug/158902
The same behaviour in Kubuntu 9.04 64bit with KDE 4.3.
I am unable to reproduce in KDE 4.3 on Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty.
(In reply to comment #12) > I am unable to reproduce in KDE 4.3 on Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. I using Czech localisation with UTF8 encoding.
I have KDE and Dolphin in Hebrew, but the system locale is en_US.UTF-8.
corwin78, is this still affecting you? in KDE 4.4?
(In reply to comment #15) > corwin78, is this still affecting you? in KDE 4.4? Hello Dotan, Kubuntu 9.10 with KDE 4.4.1 from PPA is OK.
Thanks, then, as I also see the issue fixed I am closing it.
I'm still seeing this bug on Slackware 13.1, with KDE 4.4.3. I initially ran across it using Amarok, and then found that it also occurs in Konqueror and Dolphin. The problem is still the same: if I start Amarok / Dolphin / Konqueror over ssh, and both machines use UTF-8 locale, then non-ASCII characters are displayed incorrectly. Could this bug please be reopened? Please let me know if you'd like me to test patches, etcetera. Also, @corwin78, are there any patches to kdelibs in the KDE 4.4.1 PPA for Kubuntu that might not be applied upstream?
Additionally, I found that the same problem occurs when I start dolphin with kdesu.
Thanks, PJ. KDE 4.4 is quite old, if you can post reproduction instructions I'll test with 4.6 and reopen if necessary. I'm no longer seeing this bug, but I may not be doing the actions that you are.

Thanks, PJ, kdesu uses the root account default settings I believe. Try removing /root/.kde as there might be some cruft in there. I just tested on a clean /root/.kde in KDE 4.6beta2 and I was able to open Dolphin with kdesudo (Ubuntu equivalent to kdesu) and SSH into a box with non-ASCII UTF-8 filenames. All the filenames displayed as expected.
