It is rather difficult for me to enter a slash in dates, I am hard-wired culturally to the dash. Can there  be an option to enter dates in Kontact (specifically, the Birthday field or the Contacts tab) with dashes instead of slashes? Thanks.

The date picker's date format should be the same as the format you set in the control center. Does changing the date format in the control center (and then restarting Kontact) not work for you?

Thank you, Thomas. You are right, that solved my problem. I did not think to look in Kcontrol instead of Kontact's options.

The development of the old KAddressBook will be discontinued for KDE 4.4.
Since the new application has the same name, but a completly new code base we close all bug reports against the old version and ask the submitters to resend there reports against the new product.
