Version: 0.9.2 (using KDE KDE 3.5.8) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages OS: Linux Please, please, please allow Dolphin to have a Windows-like "List" mode. Preferably a multicolumn, minimalist list mode displaying just the file name. Oftentimes, folders with thousands of files are horrible to work with in anything but "Details" view mode, and the extended details are unnecessary, take up space, and make for much scrolling.
Thanks for your suggestion, but this is already possible: - Go to Settings -> Configure Dolphin... - Select "View Modes" - In the "Icons" Tab select "Top to Bottom" for the Arrangement" - It might be useful to decrease the icon size by Ctrl+- In Dolphin for KDE 4 we think about making this more obvious. BTW: I know it has not been communicated very well, but bugs.kde.org for Dolphin is only valid for the KDE 4 version of Dolphin, the KDE 3 version is not maintained anymore (see also http://enzosworld.gmxhome.de/download.html section "Dolphin 0.8.2 (KDE 3.5.5)" for more infos).
What Sam means is more the display you get when selecting icon arrangement "Left to Right", not "Top to Bottom". But that still doesn't resemble what Windows' Explorer list mode gives and what the reason is I like it too. The line spacing is (or can be) tighter than dolphin shows with "grid spacing: small". Also horizontal grid is not fixed but adjusts to the widest text. What brings me to the next point, that in dolphin it might happen text is truncated with "...". I can imagine three . 1. Auto adjust the grid width for all columns in the current window to the widest text. 2. Auto adjust the grid width for each column in the current window to widest text in that column. Space saving but would lead to disturbing jumping of text when resizing the window vertically. 3. Actually use multiple lines for the text when one isn't enough (at least if "Number of lines" in the "View Modes" is set to > 1). Please put a little more effort in such a list mode (made available through a dedicated view mode", Konqueror on KDE 3.x has one (though a bit buggy). It's quite efficient in space utilisation, I used it all the time.
Thanks Robert for your input! Regarding the dynamic grid size: this is planned for KDE 4.1, but I'm not sure whether Rafael Fernandez Lopez (= maintainer of the KCategorizedView) has enough time to implement this. Currently Qt4 does not support such a dynamic grid size mode like in Qt3 and it means quite some effort for implementing this.
I attach my request for a multicolumn list. The list mode proposed above made from icon view is not a good solution. First of all if you change the "icon view" into the "list view" you lose generally the nice icon view. "1. Auto adjust the grid width for all columns in the current window to the widest text. 2. Auto adjust the grid width for each column in the current window to widest text in that column. Space saving but would lead to disturbing jumping of text when resizing the window vertically. 3. Actually use multiple lines for the text when one isn't enough (at least if "Number of lines" in the "View Modes" is set to > 1)" Yes, sure, it is generally what can be done, but in order to see again the "icon view" when the names of files are under the icon, the text has appropriate length I HAVE TO UNDO ALL THESE THINGS. You can't do it with one click. Generally - a real multicolumn view is needed. Conservative GNOME opposed many years, but finally "gave up" and offered this solution. In my opinion it was done super well in newest GNOME 2.23. --- Some comments about the multicolumn view made out of list view: 1) there is no possibility to set the lenght of file names as automatic, short names, short distance between columns, long names - the distance changes appropriately. Picture 1.png shows the waste of place which could be avoided. Such a problem doesn't exist in Thunar and Nautilus (2.23 or later) 2) when from a "list view" made out of icon view I want to get the previews of files I get a complete waste of place and the names are being shortened. ---

@Greg: Thanks for your input and screenshots, I agree that some things need to be fixed. One basic question which is important for me: From my observings people either use the "icons view aligned from left to right" or use the "icons view aligned from top to bottom" (= the "list view") but don't use both of them in parallel. I currently cannot think of a usecase why people want to switch between both views in parallel. Do I miss here something? I see for sure use cases for switching between an "icons view" and "details view" and "column view", as each of the view modes has its benefits and drawbacks. But whether the alignment is done from left-to-right or top-to-bottom in the "icons view" is mainly a matter of taste. So my current plan would be makeing the sizes/gaps handling more clever in KDE 4.2, but I don't have a plan to introduce a 4th view mode (at least until I know whether people really use the 2 alignments in parallel).
SVN commit 880540 by ppenz: Allow to configure no grid spacing. This is useful if the icons view is used in the "column mode" with very small icons. BUG: 151164 M +12 -3 iconsviewsettingspage.cpp WebSVN link: http://websvn.kde.org/?view=rev&revision=880540

Is this now fixed? Or only that no-grid-spacing? I draw some picture from what I want dolphin to look. (Based on screenshot http://dolphin.kde.org/images/view_mode_4.png ) -width is just enough that all name fits -horizontal-scrollbar only -little icons (in picture sorting is funny)
Everything is fixed except of having dynamic widths. Dolphin can be configured like in your screenshot for KDE 4.2 :-)
