Version: 0.9.2 (using KDE KDE 3.5.8) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages OS: Linux There is no way to change file associations inside Dolphin itself. Kcontrol is not put into the K-Menu in some distributions like Kubuntu. It would really be useful to put file association configuration into Dolphin. Right-clicking and selecting open with and making it remember the program used is fine for basic things but an advanced association configuration is needed.
I do not believe that the desktop environment's file association management is a task that should be left for any file manager. It's a responsibility of the desktop environment. KDE already handles this quite beautifully through the KDE control center. I don't see how could KDE benefit from this knowing that this results in duplicating a feature which is already present. On the other hand, some distributions like Kubuntu simply leave KDE control center out and simply removed this feature, at least from the obvious desktop environment configuration path. Nonetheless, is it KDE's job to pick up any linux distribution's slack and try to solve their half-assed mistakes? I don't believe so.
I agree with that point, KDE's default control centre is amazing enough for anyone. But a menu option in the file manager, which would in turn load the corresponding control centre module shouldn't hurt. This feature can and should be a part of a file manager also, because it is the one responsible for managing files and we are talking about *file* associations.
Dolphin for KDE3 is not mantained anymore. In KDE4 the file association module is present in recent SVN revisions. (Tested on 755041)
I've reopened this bug, as I also think there should be a way in Dolphin to configure file associations. For sure I'll try to use the corresponding kcm-module instead of duptlicating any code.
Now that 4.2 is in beta and due to be released by the end of this month, allow me to draw your attention to this bug once again. As of 4.1.86, the configuration dialog in Konqueror still provides configuration options related to file management (specifically "File Associations" and "Trash"), while they are missing in Dolphin. For an average user, the configuration dialog of the file manager (as opposed to the web browser) is the intuitive place to look for these options. Please make these configuration options available from within Dolphin, too. Thanks.
KDE 4.2 beta2 has it in the system settings.
@Georg: thanks for the reminder, this will be one of the first tasks for the KDE 4.3 version of Dolphin. @Chandra: It's fine that this issue is resolved for you, but I agree with Georg that it should also be possible to configure this also within the Dolphin settings dialog (I got several mails that people don't know how to change file associations). I've reopened this issue again in the sense of "allow to configure this within Dolphin" :-)
As of 4.3 RC2, the configuration dialog in Konqueror still provides a configuration option related to file management (specifically "File Associations"), while it is missing in Dolphin.
It turned out that the file associations dialog from Konqueror cannot be used by Dolphin, as Dolphin does not support embedding of previews (on purpose). So it would be a little bit more work than expected to provide such a dialog in Dolphin. Still it is possible in Dolphin to change the association: - right-click on the file where you want to change the association - click "Properties..." - click on the icon next to "Type" But I still agree, this should be fixed.

Resetting assignee to default as per bug #305719
As of recent versions of Dolphin, there are now two ways to do this: 1. Right-click > Open With > Other 2. Open file properties window > File Type Options > General > Application Preference Order > Change the order to suit your needs
