HISTORY:

I had a vanilla install of Kubuntu Feisty and just finished installing Kubuntu Gutsy Final (KDE 3.5.8) over it. I'd had trouble with it not accepting the kwallet password, so I deleted the kdewallet, and recreated a new one with the same name. So far so good.

Second, I opened Kopete (for the first time) and entered the details of my MSN account into it without problem (telling it to remember the password). It asked for the kdewallet password which I typed and it accepted.

When I then went and changed kopete's status to "Online" it tries to connect for a couple of seconds and then crashes with the following backtrace:

It does this consistently every time I try to change the status to online/away/invisible etc (but not offline).
