Version:           3.5.7 (using KDE 3.5.7, compiled sources)
Compiler:          Target: i486-slackware-linux
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.6.20

It takes very long to start after clicking on its icon.

Then if I should select a different area it initially becomes very unresponsive.

I hoped in this never installation 3.5.4 it would improve, but its the same.

Maybe I should change a setting somewhere?

I see similar things in 4.1.2 - submitted bug #181291 for it.

KDE4 had different issues, that were fixed in 4.1.4.
