Description C.Anne Wilson 2007-08-27 10:33:08 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.7)
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs
OS: Linux

Similar to 'Bug 45478: Does not receive keyboard input: cannot log in.', closed, but apparently unresolved. Like people reporting in that thread,it appeared to stem from an update, but this proved to be a red herring.

Description:
At boot-up, graphical login interface loads, but keyboard input is not accepted. If you try a few times, you get a runaway '8'. Re-starting X allows normal login.

Cause:
Apparently an invalid line in fstab. In my case, an smb: mapping no longer valid.

Resolution:
Remove offending line. Login returns to normal.

this is seems to be a problem in the X server. please report to Xorg.
Comment 2 C.Anne Wilson 2007-08-27 16:21:13 UTC
OK - I'll do that. However, I'd like to understand why it is X server. Is kdm not handling the login at that point?
