Description Francois Marier 2007-08-01 06:16:31 UTC
Version: 1.0.3 (using KDE KDE 3.5.7)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS: Linux

Gary Dale <gary@extremeground.com> reported intermittent problems with the verfication of video DVDs. See the Debian bug tracker at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=434658.

Here's a summary of what he said about it:

--------------------------------
Sometimes K3B fails with an error message while at other times it hangs
(both at the 50% mark when beginning the verify stage).

I have only tested this behaviour on burning video DVDs so I don't know
if it happens on other types of media or not. Sorry, I don't have an
error message for you, but the last time I burned a DVD, it hung. I am
sure that it is not a hardware problem however, because NeroLinux
v2.1.0.2 is able to verify OK when I use it instead.

Here's some stuff from the messages log that may be relevant:

-----------------------------------------
I've tried two more video DVD burns. One worked while the other hung at
the 50% mark after burning the DVD. It ejected the DVD, brought the tray
back in again, then did nothing. I was able to close (cancel) the burn
window but I had to kill K3B - it wouldn't shut down normally.

Further to the issue, I have also tried to burn a CD ISO image twice now
without any luck. The burn process completes but the verify step hangs.
And I can't shut down K3B. I have to "kill" it.
--------------------------------------------
I've burned 5 DVD ISO images and 4 verified properly. The
fifth one hung on the verify step. It never budged past 50% even after
waiting an hour.

So yes, there is an intermittent problem still with the verify. It's not as
bad as it was with the earlier version, but it still exists. And when the
problem crops up, I have to kill K3B - it won't close and neither will the
progress dialog (it takes the click when I press cancel, but never closes).

Gary added the following comment:

last week I installed the k3b version from sid and I can confirm that I am
having the same problems.
- k3b sometimes hangs on the verify stage when burning DVDs - whether ISO
or as a project. When this happens, k3b cannot be shut down and must be
killed.
- k3b sometimes turns off DMA on the DVD device.
- (I don't think I mentioned this before but) k3b sometimes hangs around as
a zombie, preventing it from being launched until the existing instance is
killed.

I've had this problem for a couple months or so. The drive used to open at the end of writing, then close and run the verification. This was on my "server" system with a Optiarch DVD/CD writer. On my laptop, which does not have a motorized tray, the tray would eject, then a dialog would pop up saying, "Please insert the media to be verified" or "Cannot reload media, please check" (it's been a while, hard to remember), and an "load/abort/retry" selection.

For the last month, the drives reach 50%, eject, and then never retract. The laptop does not get a "Cannot reload media" dialog, and if I do close the drive(s), they just sit there doing nothing until I cancel the write operation.

So far, all the disks have been correctly written (or at least all the files I've checked).

Debian Sid.

Confirmed on Debian sid (k3b 1.0.4-7) when burning data DVD.

When verification is required:
- burning goes normally
- dvd is ejected
- k3b consumes 100% CPU, k3b windows is not refreshed
- Need to kill k3b
- can successfully verify DVD with md5sum
