Description Aaron Williams 2007-07-06 18:51:25 UTC
Version: 0.12.6 (using KDE 3.5.7 "release 43.1" , openSUSE )
Compiler: Target: x86_64-suse-linux
OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.18.8-0.3-default

It seems with Yahoo that with some users everytime the connection hiccups that Kopete asks me if I want to authorize the users. It doesn't matter whether I accept or not, it asks each time. The users have already been added.

Furthermore, Kopete doesn't stop at one dialog, but will repeat the dialog each time so I can end up with a dozen or so dialogs for a few users asking authorization.

I've tried to reproduce and have had no luck doing it, using Kopete 0.12.7/KDE 3.5.9.

Can the reporter try with the most recent version or give more details on how to reliably reproduce?
Comment 2 Aaron Williams 2008-07-07 23:19:43 UTC
I cannot specify an easy method of reproducing it since it seems to have something to do with how some of the names in my address book were registered.

I am currently running the latest patch release for 3.5.9 and it still happens.

It is always the same three account names. Deleting the accounts in Kopete does not solve the problem since they are still registered with Yahoo.

Also, every couple of hours the process repeats. It seems that the connection resets periodically which causes my status to briefly disappear and once it reconnects the dialogs reappear.

Also of interest is that sometimes when this happens I get dialog boxes asking me to authorize a new user where the username is a truncated version of one of those three usernames. I.e. if one of them is UsernameABCDE it will ask for authorization for UsernameABC or Use or some other variant of the name.

I also have a second independent Yahoo account and never see this behavior, but it is always repeatable in my setup with the first account.

I do not believe my firewall is periodically killing the connection either since it is a Linux box.

As I mentioned in Bug 152670, I have the same problem.
I'm convinced it's not a client caused issue since you get it on a fresh install and on different machines simply by logging in.
Perhaps any of the devs want to lend my user-id/password for a few hours?
That way they can perhaps see and reproduce the effects.

I don't mind the disconnect/reconnect issues that much, even though they are annoying. Ideally, the solution for me is to silently discard the authorization requests once I've indicated this through a "don't bug me again" checkbox.
Comment 5 Aaron Williams 2008-07-08 23:42:14 UTC
I wonder if the Yahoo client periodically makes a keep-alive type request that keeps the connection alive which Kopete does not do. It is during these reconnects that I also get requests for authorization with a truncated user name. I even get these periodic disconnects while in the middle of talking with someone, which is also annoying for the other person unaware of this behavior with Kopete.

The jYMSG project has "automatic keep-aline" listed as a feature. So maybe arronw has a point.

Hello from the KDE Bugsquad!

Unfortunately, Yahoo has discontinued the Yahoo Messenger service, and the code has been removed from Kopete.

Thus, I am closing this bug as "UNMAINTAINED" since it will no longer be fixable, or able to operate due to Yahoo.
