Version: 1.9.6 (using KDE 3.5.6-9.fc7 Fedora, Fedora release 6.93 (Rawhide)) Compiler: Target: i386-redhat-linux OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.21-1.3194.fc7 When starting kmail (with an account that uses imap) I get an error dialog titled Error - KMail and with the message Could not start process for imaps. Kmail keeps trying to start an imap process, if I click OK to get rid of an error dialog a new one pops up in a few seconds.
Try installing cyrus-sasl. Also try launching KMail from commandline and see if it outputs errors about undefined symbols. Also try updating to the lastest version (1.9.7).

I have debian testing/unstable. I'm using KDE 3.5.9 and KMail 1.9.9 This bug started to appear to me too.
By the way, debian repo doesn't contain package cyrus-sasl.
