When using KMail with an IMAP account, and KMail is configured to display the number of new messages on the system tray icon, then the contents of the IMAP account's Trash folder is counted too.
KMail shouldn't count the deleted but unread messages to the new message number. This is not the case when using the Local Folder's Trash directory. The IMAP account's Trash folder is configurable, so KMail should exclude that directory when counting new messages.

Hmm, could this be the same as bug 136821 or bug 90386?

I don't think it's a duplicate.  Bug 136821 and bug 90386 relate to msgs which have the imap state "deleted" and "unread", msgs in the Trash folder aren't marked "deleted".  So even as those are technically new = unread they shouldn't be counted as they reside in the configured trash folder.
