Hm, I'm afraid I cannot reproduce this bug.
You need to upgrade your version of libpng.
What libpng version is required?
Either from 1.2.0 to 1.2.9 or from 1.2.15 and higher (but no libpng between 1.2.10 and 1.2.14) Note that, I haven't test 1.2.16 to 1.2.18, but the bug was fixed in 1.2.15.
libpng 1.2.46-3ubuntu4 this bug (or similar) is present, at least when saving 16-bit png
Ok, let;s investigate again.
May be I was wrong and it is export bug. The bug appears when export (may be not just png...)app
I also have 1.2.46 and I don't see any big increase of memory usage. Only a small temporary bump while saving.
I have 1.2.49-2.1.2 and 1.4.11-2.5.1 on opensuse 12.2. I do see an increase in memory after exporting with png.

I've saved a few dozen png's when running under massif, and no leak anymore.
