Description Maciej Pilichowski 2007-05-06 12:32:31 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.6)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

Kill your network connection, start KMail, check mail in. Result --> Transmission complete. No new message.

It is not true, there is no connection, not new messages. Please, inform the user about the situation -- in this case "Cannot check in mail -- no connection" would be true, useful and appropriate :-)

I suspect this is a problem with KNetworkManager.
What happens if you turn off the Network Status Daemon (using kcmshell kcmkded)?

Thomas, yes, there is (was) problem with KNM, but it is not the point. There was no connection and it is quite normal situation (the router can be off, you could be out of reach of some AP, you could forget to start connection...). KMail should display more appropriate info.

I am not familiar with this, so I will be grateful if you tell me exactly what I should do.

Well, for me, when there is no connection, KMail eventually displays the "host not found" error message box.

I think somehow KNetworkmanager missinforms the applications about wether they are online/offline. See bug 144816 (although this is the opposite case).

Simply type "kcmshell kcmkded" in a Konsole window. The rest should be self-explaining, just remove the checkbox from the network status daemon and stop it as well.

I see this message only (? well, I don't die for that :-) ) when I am connected but there is much traffic KMail cannot connect.

Ok, I did some tests:
a) I set KNM to off-line mode -- KMail immediatelly (!) says there are no mails (as before, so I guess it does not even check my accounts)
b) I set KNM to on-line, but then I turned off (stopped) NSD (just like you told me to) and then I clicked to "check in mail" --> KMail started checking mail

As I am not entirely sure if this is really a Knetworkmanager bug, I add the KNetworkmanager guy to the CC list.

Mea culpa. It is the offline mode handling in KMail, KNetworkManager just controls the kded module. I might be able to fix this for 3.5.8 but I would need new strings to do so.

I am using SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (KDE 3.5.1 Level "a").

In my hands, this problem only arises if a dial up connection is used, not when using a permanent ethernet connection.

If I turn the Network Status Daemon off and subsequently turn it on again the problem is gone.

Is there a way to automate this turning off and on for the time being?

This still sometimes happens - for me with normal nm-applet. Exspecially when a connection is currently started or up for just some seconds, kmail suddently aborts mail fetching and says "No new mail"

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
