Description Xushi 2007-04-09 19:28:07 UTC
Version: 0.12.4 (using KDE KDE 3.5.6)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc version 4.1.1 (Gentoo 4.1.1) CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium-m -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
OS: Linux

I noticed this when moving to work with a windows machine there. I don't know how long it's been going.

Apparently, I log on to my account on kopete and remain online. But On the other side, i'm viewed as online for about 5 minutes, then i'm offline for 1 or 2 hours.. then i'm online again for 5 mintues, then offline again, even though i never logged off.

They send messages to me when i'm online and i recieve them. When i'm viewed as offline to them, i can't receive their messages and they can't receive mine.

On my side, it never disconnects me or reconnects me or anything.. It just looks as if i'm always online to me. I wouldn't have known about this unless i asked and found out.

I don't even know if it's a bug here, or my modem/isp/connection.

I have app-crypt/qca-tls-1.0-r3 and dev-libs/openssl-0.9.8d

I have in my settings,
Use SSL
allow plain text pwd auth
override default server
talk.google.com:5223

Kopete - priority 5

I'm willing to test/debug anything that is needed. I work long hours so it might be a few hours late every day to report any information.

I hope this helps.

sorry for taking so long to get back to you. A few questions:

- Are you still having this problem?
- Is your account a google talk account?
- When you are being shown as offline in the windows client, does your internet connection still work? (I assume it does but I want to be sure)

Thanks!

I don't know where the original reporter for this bug has gone, but I'd like to do whatever is possible to get it resolved, as my problem sounds very similar.

Essentially, I can login and chat with multiple gtalk contacts without any troubles. But, with some frequency, I will stop receiving messages even though I appear "online." To other people I will appear to have gone offline but they can continue to send me messages. As soon as I realize what's happened I can set my status to offline and then back to online, at which point I receive all of the queued messages.

To answer the questions you posed to the previous poster... yes, my account is a gtalk account and I'm certain my internet connection is still functional. In fact, I can have AIM conversations when this happens, so Kopete as a whole is still functional.

This same thing happens on my desktop running the same software.

Let me know what information I can provide beyond:
Kopete 0.12.5 (Using KDE 3.5.7)... running Debian/Unstable (i386)

Sorry for being away. I've had too much work to do. I've got free time now and will help with this issue.

- Are you still having this problem?

Yes/No. I had this problem with my previous ISP that restricted my bandwidth big time. I was browsing websites with 200bps. I'm with a new ISP now for the past 3 months and have a limit of 24GB/month. I have only seen almost the same problem one week (last week) out of the ~3 months. I predicted that it was because of me reaching the monthly limit. I switched off all my downloads, and the IM connection was stable again. The difference in the problems is that my messages don't get through to the destination, the destination's message doesn't come to me, and i appear online to them, but eventually log off then log-on again in a matter of 20 seconds. (symptoms of what looks like timeouts)

I have 2 possible conclusions.

1) It's caused from the router overloading with ed2k/torrent simultaneous connections (but this wouldn't explain why it's stable the past few months)

2) It's caused by the ISP restricting bandwidth.

- Is your account a google talk account?

Yes, but i have the same problems apparently with the ICQ account too.

- When you are being shown as offline in the windows client, does your internet connection still work? (I assume it does but I want to be sure)

Yes, but
* With the old ISP, it was very slow.
* With the new ISP, when it happened, they see me as online, until it reconnects at timeout.

The end conclusion? The original problem to me looks more like a problem from the ISP's side, rather than kopete itself. The new problem also seems so.

Nevertheless, if you wish me to debug or test anything, feel free to ask. Just be patient because i'm at work nowadays.

I hope this helps.

I can't confirm taht bug with kopete from KDE 4.1 RC1.
As the original reporter states, that this seems to be more a ISP problem rather than kopete, we should close that bug.

Also, google talk has some special features that make werid things happen. You can flag a chat as "trusted" and then the gtalk client wont make a history. But if that flag is set, offline messages wont work etc etc.

And, the googlemail ajax client itself tends to disconnect from time to time if you use the webinterface. i am chatting with my gf who uses that web client and she gets on/offline like 10 times a day. So that looks more like an issue with the gtalk network itself.

Psi also sometimes disconnects that account for no apparent reason, so this really isnt an kopete issue, in my opinion.

But if you notice something that is the fault of kopete feel free to note it here Xushi, and thanks for the help. -> WorksForMe
