Description Ernest N. Wilcox Jr. 2007-03-29 05:30:43 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.6)
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs
OS: Linux

I surf to http://www.cbs.com

The page loads, then I get an error dialog:

Title: xine error - Konqueror

No plugin found to handle this resource (http://www.cbs.com/common/vplayer2/rm_iframe.html?id=1225&ord=99858.66537311052)

Details:
08:35:02 PM: xine: couldn't find demux for >http://www.cbs.com/common/vplayer2/rm_iframe.html?id=1225&ord=99858.66537311052<
08:35:02 PM: input_http: content length = 18184 bytes
08:35:02 PM: xine: found input plugin : http input plugin

When I close the dialog, konqueror exits (crashes).

The KDE crash handler reports:

From the General tab:

"The application Konqueror (konqueror) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV).

From the Backtrace tab:

This bug report was marked as a duplicate of <A HREF="http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=117602">BUG 117602</A>, then it was marked RESOLVED with it.

I checked the link in that report <A HREF="http://www.chilloutzone.de/files/05110803.html">http://www.chilloutzone.de/files/05110803.html</A> here, and it works OK for me. Konqueror still crashes when I go to the <A HREF="http://www.cbs.com">cbs</A> site. This leads me to believe these are not the same issue.

Try to go to http://www.cbs.com/

For me, konqueror crashes with a xine error as follows:

Xine Error:

No plugin found to handle this resource (http://www.cbs.com/common/vplayer2/rm_iframe.html?id=1407&ord=48473.89894932224)

12:31:19 PM: input_http: content length = 18184 bytes
12:31:19 PM: xine: found input plugin : http input plugin

I click OK to the dialog and it closes.

Then konqueror crashes.

The KDE crash handler reports Konqueror crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV).

The Backtrace tab reports:

I use Mandriva Linux 2007.1 with KDE 3.5.6
Comment 3 Maksim Orlovich 2007-04-11 20:34:18 UTC
Are you using Kaffeine? Then don't bother reporting konqueror crashes.
Comment 4 Ernest N. Wilcox Jr. 2007-04-16 00:28:02 UTC
Yes, Kaffeine is installed. I open the CBS WEb site (http://www.cbs.com), and get the reported error as the page opens. At this point I am making no attempt to access content. I OK the error message and Konqueror crashes. Then the KDE crash handler opens reporting a Konqueror crash. The only external component mentioned in either the initial error report or the crash handler is the Xine engine. Since the crash handler reported that Konqueror crashed, I reported my issue accordingly. If either Kaffeine or the Xine engine caused Konqueror to crash, then I think Konqueror needs to do a better job of handling such errors.

I am truly disappointed in the responses I have received here. I report my issue in good faith. It is marked as a duplicate of bug 117602. I see no indication that any one checked to see if the CBS main page crashes Konqueror (or why). Issue 117602 gets marked RESOLVED, so my issue (143580) is assumed to be RESOLVED as well. The URl in bug 117602 opens a page with a player window, and does not crash Konqueror for me, so perhaps that issue has indeed been RESOLVED. My problem is when I reopened bug 143580 to inform the community that this issue may not be resolved (or may be a different issue from bug 117602), I am asked if I use Kaffeine and I am directed not to bother reporting Konqueror crashes. If this is what you want, this is what you will get. I will comply. Further, I will not bother to report any other issue in the future and I will stop associating myself with the KDE user community by ceasing to use KDE. I want nothing to do with any of you if this is how you treat your users. Even though I have spoken highly of the KDE desktop environment in the past, I will no longer. Instead, I will inform others that the KDE team does not want to hear from us when we have problems. I will tell them of this, my first experience with the KDE team.
Comment 5 Tommi Tervo 2007-04-16 08:53:05 UTC
Reason for a bit harsh responces is our frustration. We have got a tzillon random crash reports where kaffeine is usually quilty.

Here is a couple of massive bug reports about this issue:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109498
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=114198
Comment 6 Ernest N. Wilcox Jr. 2007-04-16 16:18:36 UTC
I can understand frustration, but same WEB page with same system configuration does not crash other WEB browsers such as Firefox or Epiphany. This makes me think there is an issue with Konqueror, but I could be wrong since I am not an expert programmer. I am barely a bash script writer. I issued this report with the intent of being helpful. Since I am not helping, I will close this, and find other ways to view the WEB pages I want to see. I apologize for my outburst, and I hope I did not offend anyone.
