while accessing any subdirs of www.koffice.org an error occurs.

For example:

Accessing the following with konqueror: http://www.koffice.org/kivio/
produces:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: appendlink() in /home/.edhessa/koffice/rsync/koffice/kivio/menu.inc on line 2

The error is reproducible.

we switched methods to update the files. The effect is that we reverted to the kde-wide media directory.  Which is unusable by koffice.org (I really would like people there to fix their bugs... )

Reverted to a working version of the media dir.
