Description Christian González 2007-02-18 14:37:37 UTC
Version: knetworkmanage 0.1-0ubuntu1 (edgy) (using KDE KDE 3.5.6)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

using the edgy version. But feisty version has the same "problem".

PLEASE, PLEASE simplify the menu.
You may be already used to it, but if you first see the knetworkmanager menu, it's TOTALLY confusing.

- first: differ between left and right mouse button.
left button: kable and wireless networks, other network; that's ok.
but urgently put "help", "quit" and "options" on the right mouse button.
look at KNotes e.g., that's MUCH better and simpler.

- options Menu:
"disable/enable wireless networks" and "online/offline" should not be 4 menu Items, but only 2:
if you are offline, the "online" item should not be disabled, it shouldn't be visible. the menu Item should change wether you are online or offline.
Same with "activate wireless networks"

Please, please change this.
KNetworkmanager is such a great program.
I switched between KDE and Gnome a few times. KDE is the technically and optically better one. But I must say Gnome is simpler to use for the user.
Make a step towards a simpler KDE. You don't have to cut any functionality, or cut the possibility to change much more in the properties. But simplicity is a must.

Definitely.

Some more comments:
1. Right-clicking a network has the same effect as left-clicking - networkmanager tries to connect to it. I think it would be better if right-click either didn't do anything, or showed a context menu for that network (which would allow editing its settings - WEP password, etc.)
2. Networks should be sorted in some way - alphabetically, by signal strength, etc. Right now, they don't seem to be in any particular order.

I think programs to take an idea from are knotes and kmix.
Left click: main action, right click: options and stuff...
That should be consequently added or changed in every KDE program.
It is a huge step to a professional desktop environment.

Hm. Does anyone read that?

I like that idea...

Also, is it possible to always display the popup menu *above* the icon (or below, etc. - basically, away from the mouse pointer) - the same way that klipper, items in the taskbar, and even Gaim do?

Right now, clicking the knetworkmanager icon results in selecting "Quit" quite often - because knetworkmanager sometimes freezes for a few seconds and receives the "mouse released" event after I already moved the mouse by a few pixels.
