Description Anish Muttreja 2007-01-18 19:23:10 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

I use keyboard shortcuts for the Monitor for Activity/Silence commands. Having keyboard shortcuts for these is quite handy. However, on pressing the shortcut there is no notification about whether the command was successful.
This is unlike when one activates monitoring through the context menu, where the icon changes upon selecting the command. It would be nice to have some form of visual notification like a discrete popup, with the message "this session is being monitored for ..", or maybe differently colored icon for tabs that are being monitored.

Thanks
Anish

I agree with this; I think it would be useful to have a visual marker for monitored tabs both so that you can see when they change state, but also so you can see which tabs are being monitored (and for which condition) at a glance. This could be done with an icon/marker on the tab, with tab color, by underlining the label, or possibly by some other means. In addition, this might be a use case for bug #127595, in that when you trigger one type of monitoring, you want to simultaneously disable any other types of monitoring that were previously active, which should include a visual change to the "monitoring marker".

It's definitely something necessary!
The only way to get some information about whether these monitors are enabled or not is through the toolbar which is available for some versions of konsole (https://i.imgur.com/Pd2sEgw.png). But this is not an adequate solution since not all users use it and it only reports the status of the active tab.

I suggested in another bug (#439738) to use kirigami alerts, and they will be displayed when pressing the key, which still keeps the need to display some indicator on the tab.

My suggestion is something like what I tried to do in this image: https://i.imgur.com/ZSzaD8d.png
The icon will indicate that any monitor is active
The counter next to the tab name will indicate if there are any pending notifications

I think using tabs with different colors is a bit much for that, and they are usually used to indicate the connection to some remote server. This is already a WIP in konsole and will be available soon.

Just wanna clarify something: if this will get implemented, will it make it into yakuake as well, as both it and konsole use same components? Or should I file a separate "bug" report for yakuake specifically? Indicator for activity/inactivity monitoring is something I'd love to have in both applications.
