Description Paul Beesley 2007-01-17 19:10:35 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from: I Don't Know
OS: Linux

Kopete Version: 0.12.3

Firstly, a big thank you for implementing webcam support in kopete!

Description:
When sending webcam to a contact using Windows Live Messenger 8.0 (other versions not tested) all works fine and my contact tells me everything is smooth. When receiving from the same contact, video is also smooth. However, doing both at once makes my contact's video lag and become out of sync. The Kopete interface also lags, (but cpu usage is around 20%.) My video is unaffected and my contact sees no difference. When I stop sending my video, my contact's video becomes very fast for a short time (it's "catching up") and then returns to normal, the kopete interface also returns to normal speed.

Possible explanation:
In older kopete builds the webcam feed was polled every 1000ms for a new image, resulting in 1fps video. Now this is 25fps, the polling interval is 1000ms / fps. My guess would be that the interface and receiving video lag due to the near-constant polling of the video feed.

Details:
OS: OpenSUSE 10.2
Webcam: Quickcam Communicate STX
Driver: http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html
Connection: 6mbps down, 0.5mbps up

I can confirm this bug on kubuntu 6.10 (edgy), kopete 0.12.4 and using the spca5xx driver, too.
Comment 2 Brandon Munger 2007-03-08 04:47:29 UTC
I can also confirm this on kubuntu 6.10, kopete 0.12.4 using bt878 driver.
Comment 3 Paul Beesley 2007-03-13 21:17:35 UTC
Using the same driver, and now 0.12.4 on KDE 3.5.6, I can confirm that this bug does *not* occur when using the yahoo webcam under the same circumstances. I assume therefore that the bug is specific to msn webcam support, not the driver.

Bug 145449 might be a duplicate of this one, or share its root.
Comment 6 Amy Brodzik 2007-07-09 18:21:42 UTC
Same problem; running Kubuntu Feisty; also occurred on Edgy. Using Kopete 0.12.5.

As mentioned above too, I have no problems with Yahoo webcam support.

Here when using simultaneously send/receive, kopete freezes intermitently several times a second, and I can see the text I type appear after a while instead of instantaneously. ov51x-jpeg driver.

We've completely replaced the current MSN implementation with a new MSN implementation which If you continue to experience this bug after testing the new implementation (which can be gotten from our subversion repository or with the KDE 4.2 Beta 1 release), PLEASE, open a new bug rather than reopening this bug. Thank you for your time and efforting in helping us find and fix problems in Kopete.
