select  debug->valgrind memory leak check
select the exec file

You write "open the project" - are you sure you did this? Because there was a bug for just this case: using the valgrind frontend without a project loaded would lead to a crash.

to be specific i meant to say  open a C source file .. 
i hadn't opened the project..

Great. One less mystery. This was fixed in 3.4 branch a few weeks ago.
